Bokeem Woodbine Talks Government Cheese, Jimi Hendrix, and a Possible MCU Return as Shocker – Interview

Bokeem Woodbine breaks down the meaning behind Government Cheese.

Bokeem Woodbine, who recently starred in HALO is no stranger to playing complex, unforgettable characters, and his latest role in Government Cheese on Apple TV+ is no exception. Set in 1969, San Fernando Valley, the surrealist family comedy follows the Chambers family as they chase impossible dreams with humor, heart, and a heavy dose of chaos.

When I sat down to speak with Woodbine, a friend in this industry, the conversation felt like a catch-up between two people who could talk for hours. Woodbine opened up about his role and the meaning behind the show’s eye-catching title.

“It evokes memories of times both good and bad,” he said. “Government Cheese is about making something out of nothing and not letting anything keep you down. Sometimes you get knocked down, but it’s about getting back up and what you learn when you hit the floor. It’s about courage and aspiration.”

The series was created by David Oyelowo, who stars as Hampton Chambers.

It paints a stylized portrait of a family adapting to a changed world after Hampton’s release from prison. While Hampton expected a heartfelt reunion, his wife Astoria (played by Simone Missick) and sons Einstein and Harrison have built a life of their own. His return throws their fragile balance into comedic and dramatic disarray.

Woodbine stars alongside a standout ensemble that includes Jean-Michel Richaud, Jeremy Bobb, Louis Cancelmi, Thomas Beaudoin, and John Ortiz.

When asked if he ever experienced a “reach for the impossible” moment in his own career, Woodbine pointed to his acclaimed turn in the second season of Fargo. “When my agent first told me I had an audition, it seemed completely unrealistic,” he said. “Like, ‘This has to be a mistake.’ But then I got the gig. That was my impossible moment.” Given the series’ 1969 setting, I asked Woodbine what he would do if he could spend a day in that era. “Easy,” he said with a smile. “I’d just go see Jimi Hendrix live. That would be it.”

As a car guy myself, I couldn’t help but praise the show’s vintage vehicles — especially the one driven by Woodbine’s character — which further ground the show in its era while adding serious style.

A MCU Return?

Before we wrapped, I had to mention a topic that gets Marvel fans buzzing—the possibility of Woodbine returning as Shocker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. “It’s not up to me,” he said. “But I certainly wouldn’t say no.”

Neither would we. Woodbine’s energy, authenticity, and grounded performances continue to earn him a loyal fanbase. As someone who’s always rooting for him, I’ll keep crossing my fingers we get more “Bokeemian” greatness in the Marvel Universe and beyond.

Until then, you can catch him delivering another standout performance in Government Cheese, now streaming on Apple TV+.
