Focus Features sets October release for Bugonia.
Focus Features will release Bugonia with a special limited engagement on October 24, followed by a wide expansion on October 31. The darkly satirical thriller is directed by Academy Award® winner Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Will Tracy (The Menu).
The cast features Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. Producers include Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone, Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Miky Lee, and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko.
The film follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the powerful CEO of a major company, believing she is an alien intent on destroying Earth.
Lanthimos’ Distinct Filmography
Lanthimos has built a reputation for blending unsettling surrealism with biting social commentary. His breakout film Dogtooth (2009) earned international acclaim and an Academy Award nomination. He followed with The Lobster (2015), a dystopian love story starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
His films The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) and The Favourite (2018) further solidified his unique voice, with The Favourite earning 10 Academy Award nominations and a win for Olivia Colman. Most recently, Lanthimos reunited with Emma Stone for Poor Things (2023), which won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Stone. He also released Kinds of Kindness in 2024.
