Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons star in Bugonia.

Focus Features has announced that “Bugonia,” the latest film from Oscar-nominated director Yorgos Lanthimos, will have a limited release in theaters on October 24, followed by a wide expansion on October 31.
The film stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. Based on a screenplay by Will Tracy (Succession, The Menu), Bugonia follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the powerful CEO of a major corporation, convinced she’s an alien plotting Earth’s destruction.

The dark satire reunites Lanthimos with frequent collaborator and Academy Award winner Emma Stone, who also serves as a producer on the project alongside Lanthimos, Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Miky Lee, and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko.
A History of Bold Filmmaking
Known for his provocative and surreal storytelling, Yorgos Lanthimos first broke onto the global scene with Dogtooth (2009), a chilling and absurd tale of isolation that won the Prix Un Certain Regard at Cannes and earned an Oscar nomination. His English-language debut, The Lobster (2015), introduced his offbeat voice to a wider audience, starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz in a dystopian love story that challenged societal norms.
He followed that with The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), a psychological thriller starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, and The Favourite (2018), which earned ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Director for Yorgos Lanthimos and a Best Actress win for Olivia Colman. Most recently, his film Poor Things (2023) once again brought him and Stone critical acclaim, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and multiple Oscars.
Bugonia marks another intriguing turn in Lanthimos’ ever-evolving filmography—this time blending sci-fi, paranoia, and satire into what promises to be one of the fall’s most talked-about releases.
