Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz Face Paranoia in Bunker

Oscar-winning filmmaker Florian Zeller reunites Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz for a psychological thriller about wealth, fear and a marriage pushed to its limits.

Oscar winners Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz are heading into dangerous psychological territory in Bunker, the latest film from acclaimed writer and director Florian Zeller (The Father, The Son). The star-studded thriller will arrive in theaters nationwide on January 15, 2027, following an award-qualifying theatrical run beginning December 11, 2026.

The film brings together an impressive ensemble that includes Stephen Graham (Adolescence, Snatch), Paul Dano (The Batman, There Will Be Blood) and Patrick Schwarzenegger (The White Lotus, The Staircase).

Blending domestic drama with mounting psychological tension, Bunker explores what happens when extreme wealth, paranoia and fears about the future begin to destroy the foundations of a seemingly stable marriage.

A Marriage Threatened by Wealth, Fear and Paranoia

At the center of Bunker is Miguel (Bardem), a successful London architect who receives a prestigious and potentially life-changing opportunity to design a survivalist bunker for a wealthy technology billionaire, played by Dano.

What initially appears to be an extraordinary professional achievement soon raises troubling questions about morality, privilege, and the lengths people will go to protect themselves from an uncertain future.

Miguel’s wife, Sofia (Cruz), begins questioning their relationship of 17 years as the couple becomes increasingly entangled in a world defined by extraordinary wealth, secrecy and fear.

Their already fragile circumstances grow more unsettling when a disturbing neighbor intrudes into their lives, introducing another source of anxiety and tension.

As Miguel becomes consumed by his new project, the couple must confront difficult questions about their values, their marriage, and the growing divide between those who can afford to escape a potential catastrophe and those who cannot.

Rather than focusing solely on the threat of global disaster, Bunker examines the emotional consequences of preparing for one, particularly when survival becomes a luxury reserved for the ultrawealthy.

Florian Zeller Returns With Another Psychological Drama

Zeller previously earned widespread acclaim for his feature directorial debut, The Father, which starred Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. The film won two Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Zeller and Christopher Hampton.

He followed that success with The Son, starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern and Vanessa Kirby, continuing his exploration of deeply personal relationships and emotional conflict.

With Bunker, Zeller turns his attention toward contemporary fears surrounding technology, economic inequality and the growing influence of billionaires.

The film also reunites real-life married couple Bardem and Cruz on screen, adding another dimension to a story built around the unraveling of a long-term relationship.

Bunker Builds Momentum Following Major Film Festival Screenings

Before its upcoming theatrical release, Bunker secured official selections at several major international film festivals, including the Venice Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Zurich Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival.

The film premiered in competition at Venice, placing Zeller’s latest work among the festival’s high-profile international features.

Produced by Fernando Bovaira, Alice Dawson, Simón de Santiago, Federica Sainte-Rose and Zeller, the psychological thriller has a running time of 126 minutes. Sony Pictures Classics is handling its North American release.

With its accomplished filmmaker, powerhouse ensemble, and timely examination of wealth and survival, Bunker brings together the ingredients for a provocative character-driven thriller centered on a chilling question: What happens when the fear of losing everything becomes more destructive than the danger itself?

BUNKER begins its award-qualifying theatrical run on December 11, 2026, before opening in theaters nationwide on January 15, 2027.
