Conclave will be in theaters starting October 25th.

Conclave is a riveting watch packed with suspense and stellar performances that elevate the film’s otherwise slow pacing. Edward Berger directs the film, which is based on Robert Harris’ novel. It explores the deeply secretive and ancient process of selecting a new Pope. This process follows the sudden death of a beloved pontiff. While it offers plenty of tension and anxiety-inducing moments, it’s not without its flaws.
Ralph Fiennes delivers another powerhouse performance.
He plays Cardinal Lawrence, the man responsible for leading the papal selection process. Fiennes masterfully conveys the stress and anxiety that comes with this high-stakes role, keeping the audience on edge throughout. The suspense is palpable as Lawrence uncovers a series of troubling secrets left behind by the deceased Pope. Fiennes’ nuanced portrayal makes it hard not to feel his character’s unease.
The supporting cast, including Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Carlos Diehz, also shines. However, Lithgow’s role felt underutilized. As a viewer, I was left wanting more from his character, whose presence, while impactful, didn’t have the depth or screen time it deserved. Tucci, on the other hand, adds his usual charm, but it’s Fiennes who unquestionably steals the show.

One standout aspect of Conclave is its sound design, which plays a key role in building tension. Every subtle creak of the Vatican halls, the echoing footsteps of the Cardinals, and the whisper of secrets in darkened corridors amplify the film’s atmosphere, making it as much an auditory experience as a visual one.

However, despite its strong performances and sound, the film struggles with pacing. While the premise is engaging, the movie drags at points, especially in its middle act. The slow build-up of tension feels more sluggish than deliberate, which could alienate some viewers. This pacing issue will likely make Conclave a polarizing film. Some audiences will appreciate the slow burn, while others may grow frustrated by it.
Verdict
I give Conclave 3.5 out of 5 stars. It is worth watching for Ralph Fiennes’ captivating performance and the gripping, behind-closed-doors intrigue. But for those seeking a fast-paced thriller, it may leave them wanting more. With its deliberate pacing, Conclave might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is certainly unforgettable.
