Constantine Turns 20: Keanu Reeves’ Cult Classic and Its Long-Awaited Sequel

Constantine is a bold cult classic that has found new life.

Two decades ago, on February 18, 2005, Constantine arrived in theaters, bringing audiences into a supernatural world where angels and demons walk among us. Led by Keanu Reeves in the title role, the film became a cult classic despite an initially mixed reception. Now, on its 20th anniversary, Constantine is being celebrated not just for its bold storytelling and unique vision but also for its long-awaited sequel, greenlit under DC Studios’ Elseworlds banner.

Directed by Francis Lawrence in his feature film debut.

Constantine was a striking adaptation of DC’s Hellblazer comics, albeit with notable departures from the source material. Reeves’ portrayal of John Constantine, a chain-smoking, cynical exorcist with the ability to see half-angels and half-demons, was a departure from the blond, British character of the comics. However, Reeves’ signature brooding charisma gave the role a unique edge that won over fans.

The film follows Constantine’s desperate attempt to escape damnation after a childhood suicide attempt condemned him to Hell. He is drawn into investigating a mysterious case alongside Rachel Weisz’s Angela Dodson, a skeptical detective searching for answers behind her twin sister’s death. Along the way, Constantine encounters an array of celestial and infernal beings, played by a cast that, in hindsight, was nothing short of brilliant.

The Cast

Tilda Swinton’s androgynous and calculating Gabriel remains one of the most unforgettable renditions of an angel on screen. Peter Stormare’s scenery-chewing portrayal of Lucifer is arguably one of the best cinematic versions of the Devil ever. Djimon Hounsou’s Papa Midnite, a neutral player in the eternal war between Heaven and Hell, added further mystique to the film’s rich world-building.

Though Constantine debuted to modest box office returns, it earned $230 million globally on a $100 million budget. The film gained a devoted following in the years that followed. The film’s dark, moody aesthetic, philosophical musings on faith and redemption, and unforgettable lines such as “I don’t believe in the devil? You should. He believes in you.” have cemented its status as a cult favorite.

After years of speculation and fan demand, a sequel is finally happening, thanks to James Gunn’s vision for DC Studios. Under the Elseworlds label reserved for films outside the main continuity Reeves will reprise his role in a new chapter that promises to further explore Constantine’s world of demons, angels, and moral ambiguity.

Two decades later, Constantine remains a testament to bold casting choices, a stylish supernatural-noir aesthetic, and Keanu Reeves’ undeniable screen presence. With a sequel now officially on the horizon, the legend of John Constantine is set to continue, ensuring that the film’s legacy only grows stronger with time. Grab a 4K copy here.
