25 Years Later, is it time for a Galaxy Quest Sequel?

As Galaxy Quest hits its 25th anniversary, fans are reminded of why this movie is such a cult classic. The movie has been a favorite among audiences since its release on December 25, 1999. It entertains with a fun mix of humor, touching moments, and a shout-out to science fiction fans everywhere. Directed by Dean Parisot, Galaxy Quest was penned by screenwriter David Howard. It took what could have been a one-note parody and turned it into an enduring classic.
The movie stars Tim Allen as Jason Nesmith.
He is a washed-up actor who once played the captain of the fictional starship NSEA Protector. This was in a television series much like Star Trek. Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Daryl Mitchell round out the ensemble cast, each delivering memorable performances that contributed to the film’s cult status. Rickman, in particular, shone as Alexander Dane, a classically trained actor resigned to repeating his character’s catchphrase, “By Grabthar’s hammer, you shall be avenged.” His dry wit and heartfelt performance have only grown more poignant since his passing in 2016.
Daryl Mitchell played Tommy Webber, the Protector’s pilot. He recently reflected on the film’s legacy during an interview for Shifting Gears. When asked about the possibility of a sequel, Mitchell revealed some tantalizing details. “It was going to happen, man, until Alan Rickman, God bless him, passed away, and then everything kind of went away,” Mitchell said. However, he hinted at ongoing interest: “Somebody whispered in my ear about us doing a symposium, having all of us come together and talk about it, and seeing what the audience wants.”
Sam Rockwell and Justin Long played Guy Fleegman and Brandon Wheeger, respectively.
They also discussed sequel plans on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Long shared, “Last I heard, Simon [Pegg] was writing it, and then he stopped for some reason, but he seemed really excited.” Rockwell added, “There were drafts of one that was going to be done at Amazon right before Alan passed. They were all ready to do that, and Alan was going to have to, like, miss the pilot episode but felt he’d be better for the second episode. That’s how close that came.”
Reflecting on Rickman’s irreplaceable role, Rockwell admitted, “You can’t really replace Alan unless it’s someone with stature, like Helen Mirren, Christopher Walken, or Laurence Fishburne. I thought Chris Walken could maybe replace him and just make him a real alien.” Long laughed at the suggestion, calling it “funny” but admitting the idea of a sequel was still exciting: “I would kill to do it. It’d be so fun.”
The film really plays with fandom. It showcases the devoted “Questarians” and all the cool details of the Protector’s fictional universe. These are big reasons why it resonates with so many people. It’s packed with Easter eggs and nods to classic sci-fi, making Galaxy Quest a fun mix of satire and celebration. Fans often wonder if the humor could still shine in a sequel without Rickman, who’s simply irreplaceable.
There aren’t any solid plans for a sequel yet.
However, Mitchell’s Long’s and Rockwell’s comments keep the hope alive. The film’s continued popularity also contributes to this optimism. As fans reminisce during the anniversary of this classic, the Galaxy Quest motto comes to mind. “Never give up, never surrender” could totally apply to a follow-up. Whether or not the Protector flies again, the movie’s legacy is safe as one of the most heartfelt and funny love letters to science fiction ever made.
