‘Shifting Gears’ brings Tim Allen back to ABC in a heartwarming comedy-drama.
Tim Allen returns to ABC in Shifting Gears, a family-focused comedy-drama that blends heart, humor, and horsepower. Premiering Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, the series follows Matt, a stubborn widower and the owner of a classic car restoration shop. He is forced to repair more than just vintage vehicles when his estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) and her children move in.
The show sets up a perfect storm of generational clashes and heartfelt moments.
Matt’s rigid, old-school ways collide with the more modern perspectives of Riley and her kids. With engines revving and emotions running high, Shifting Gears promises a journey of family restoration as profound as any car rolling out of Matt’s shop.
The pilot episode, aptly titled “Restoration,” introduces the strained dynamic between Matt and Riley. It offers viewers a glimpse into the complex relationships that lie ahead. The second episode, “Accommodations,” continues the narrative as Matt grapples with his grandson Carter’s anxiety and the adjustments made for him at school. At the same time, Riley dives back into her old community and plays matchmaker for a high school friend.
In addition to Allen and Dennngs, the star-studded cast of Shifting Gears includes Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. They bring humor, heart, and dynamic performances to ABC’s newest comedy-drama.
Tim Allen, known for his iconic role as Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor in Home Improvement, also serves as an executive producer on the series. Additionally, Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully bring their expertise as executive producers of the pilot episode, with Kat Dennings also joining as a producer. The show is produced by 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
Fans can catch new episodes every Wednesday on ABC, with streaming available on Hulu. Shifting Gears offers the best of both worlds for car enthusiasts and fans of heartfelt family stories.
