Celebrating 10 years of Coogler and Jordan’s breakout hit, Creed.
A decade ago today, Creed arrived in theaters and reshaped a beloved franchise for a new generation. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film told an original story connected to the Rocky universe, centering on Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky Balboa’s former rival and friend, Apollo Creed.
Coogler co-wrote the story and drew on its emotional roots to launch a working partnership with Michael B. Jordan that would later continue in Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the recent Sundance drama Sinners. The filmmaker’s grounded approach and character-first storytelling became a defining trait of their collaborations.
Plot, Callbacks, and Classic Rocky DNA
Creed follows Adonis (Jordan), who leaves his life in Los Angeles in search of identity and purpose in Philadelphia. Hoping to escape the shadow of his father’s legacy while still embracing it, he turns to Rocky Balboa for help. The film weaves in callbacks to the original Rocky entries, including training montages, street-level Philly grit, and small character moments inspired by the early films. Easter eggs—from familiar locations like Mighty Mick’s Gym to the return of the iconic steps—helped longtime fans spot the connective tissue while keeping the focus squarely on a new protagonist.
Stallone’s Return Earned Awards Attention
Sylvester Stallone stepped back into Rocky’s shoes with a performance that anchored the film’s emotional core. This was the first entry in the franchise not written by Stallone, yet he delivered one of the most heartfelt portrayals of Balboa to date.
His work earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor and an Academy Award nomination, marking a rare late-career recognition. As Rocky trains Adonis while facing his own health battle, the character shifts from fighter to mentor, offering a quiet, affecting arc that resonated with audiences.
A Strong Ensemble Gives the Film Heart
Michael B. Jordan leads the cast with a breakout performance that mixes physicality and vulnerability. Tessa Thompson joins as Bianca, a rising musician dealing with progressive hearing loss. Her relationship with Adonis adds depth that mirrors the grounded human stories found throughout the franchise.
Phylicia Rashad brings strength and warmth as Mary Anne Creed, the widow of Apollo, offering guidance that shapes Adonis’ emotional journey. These performances help the film stand on its own while honoring the legacy it builds upon.
Box Office Success and a Lasting Legacy
Creed opened on November 25, 2015 and went on to earn more than $173 million worldwide on a reported $35 million budget. The film became a critical and commercial hit, earning more than 60 award nominations from major guilds and associations. Its success cemented the franchise’s future, leading to two sequels and extending the Rocky universe for a new generation of moviegoers.
Creed remains a powerful reinvention of a classic property. Ten years later, its impact on the franchise and on the careers of Coogler and Jordan is just as strong as the day it premiered.
