Critics Choice Documentary Awards: Sugarcane, Billy & Molly, and Super/Man Among Top Nominees

Nominations unveiled for Ninth Annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards.

The Critics Choice Association (CCA) has announced the nominees for the Ninth Annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards (CCDA). The winners will be revealed at a gala event on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at The Edison Ballroom in Manhattan. Actor Erich Bergen, known for his roles on stage and screen, including Madam Secretary and Jersey Boys, will host the ceremony.

The film Sugarcane leads with eight nominations, including Best Documentary Feature.

The film’s other nods include Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie for Best Director. They are also recognized as Best New Documentary Filmmakers. Christopher LaMarca and Emily Kassie are nominated for Best Cinematography. Nathan Punwar and Maya Daisy Hawk are acknowledged for Best Editing. The film also receives honors in Best Historical Documentary, Best Political Documentary, and Best True Crime Documentary categories.

Following closely, Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story, Daughters, and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story received six nominations each. Billy & Molly earned nominations for Best Documentary Feature. They were also nominated for Best New Documentary Filmmaker for Charlie Hamilton James. Other nominations included Best Cinematography, Best Score, Best Narration, and Best Science/Nature Documentary. Daughters was recognized for Best Documentary Feature, Best Director, Best New Documentary Filmmakers, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Score. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story received several nominations. These include Best Documentary Feature, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Score. It also received accolades in Best Archival and Best Biographical Documentary categories.

The CCDA will celebrate the diverse array of documentaries.

It will highlight a wide range of subjects, including environmental and social justice issues, iconic historical figures, and heartwarming stories of wildlife. Notable nominees for Best Documentary Feature include The Greatest Night in Pop. Other nominees are Jim Henson Idea Man, Music by John Williams, and The Remarkable Life of Ibelin.

The CCDA ceremony will be live-streamed on multiple platforms, allowing viewers worldwide to tune in and celebrate the best in documentary filmmaking. This year’s event promises to be an inspiring evening. It will bring together industry professionals. They will honor the outstanding work of filmmakers who illuminate important stories through the art of documentary. The Critics Choice Documentary Awards has consistently recognized excellence in non-fiction storytelling. This year’s nominations reflect a vibrant and diverse landscape of documentary films.
