The blockbuster sci-fi video game is heading to the big screen, with CD Projekt Red producing alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura as questions surround Keanu Reeves’ possible return.

Night City is heading to the big screen. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie, bringing one of gaming’s biggest sci-fi franchises to Hollywood.
As reported by TheWrap and The Verge, the upcoming film will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the Hollywood veteran behind the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises. CD Projekt Red, the Polish video game developer responsible for Cyberpunk 2077, will also produce the adaptation.
The project remains in its early stages of development, with no director, writer, or cast members announced. Story details are also under wraps, leaving plenty of questions about how Paramount plans to translate the massive open-world game into a feature film.
One of the biggest questions involves Keanu Reeves, who famously portrayed Johnny Silverhand in the original game. His involvement in the upcoming movie has not been confirmed.
Bringing the World of Cyberpunk 2077 to Life
Released in December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world action role-playing game set in Night City, a futuristic metropolis where powerful corporations dominate society and advanced technology has transformed everyday life.
Players step into the role of V, a mercenary trying to survive in a dangerous city filled with criminal organizations, corporate conspiracies, and cybernetically enhanced individuals.
The game’s central story follows V after a dangerous job involving an experimental biochip goes wrong. The technology brings V into contact with Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rocker and anti-corporate revolutionary whose digital consciousness becomes trapped inside V’s mind.
What follows is a sprawling sci-fi adventure exploring identity, mortality, corruption, and the consequences of a society increasingly controlled by technology.
Night City itself is one of the franchise’s biggest attractions. Its neon-lit streets, towering skyscrapers, underground criminal networks and futuristic technology offer enormous possibilities for a visually ambitious Hollywood adaptation.
Paramount has not revealed whether the movie will directly adapt V’s storyline or introduce original characters within the established universe. A new story could allow filmmakers to explore an entirely different side of Night City while maintaining connections to the game.
The setting also offers opportunities for intense action sequences, futuristic vehicles, cybernetic enhancements, and the morally complicated characters who have become synonymous with the franchise.
Could Keanu Reeves Return as Johnny Silverhand?
One of the most recognizable elements of Cyberpunk 2077 is Keanu Reeves’ performance as Johnny Silverhand.
The John Wick and The Matrix star provided the character’s voice, likeness, and motion-capture performance, becoming one of the biggest names associated with the franchise.
Johnny Silverhand plays a central role in the game’s narrative, serving as both a complicated ally and a source of conflict for V. His rebellious personality, complicated history, and hatred of powerful corporations helped make him one of the game’s most memorable characters.
With Paramount developing a live-action adaptation, Reeves would be a natural choice to reprise his role if the filmmakers decide to include the character.
However, no casting announcements have been made, and there is currently no confirmation that Reeves is involved in the project.
The movie’s direction will ultimately determine whether Johnny Silverhand has a place in the story. A direct adaptation of the original game’s events could create an opportunity for Reeves to return, while a new narrative could introduce audiences to an entirely different collection of characters.
Reeves is not the only Hollywood star connected to the gaming franchise. Idris Elba joined the universe through the Phantom Liberty expansion, portraying Solomon Reed, an experienced intelligence agent operating within the dangerous district of Dogtown.
Whether either actor could appear in Paramount’s adaptation remains unknown.
Cyberpunk 2077 Has Become a Massive Entertainment Franchise
Despite experiencing a difficult launch in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 has grown into one of the most successful role-playing games of its generation. Through major updates, improvements, and additional content, CD Projekt Red helped transform the game’s reputation while expanding its audience.
The original game has surpassed 40 million copies sold worldwide, while its acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion has sold more than 15 million copies. Beyond video games, the franchise found additional success through Netflix’s animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which premiered in 2022.
The anime introduced audiences to David Martinez, a young man trying to survive in Night City who becomes involved in the dangerous world of cybernetic mercenaries.
Rather than directly adapting the game’s central storyline, the series explored a different group of characters while preserving the universe’s brutal action, emotional storytelling, and distinctive visual identity.
Its success demonstrated how the Cyberpunk universe could support compelling stories beyond V and Johnny Silverhand.
Netflix is also expanding the animated franchise with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, while CD Projekt Red continues developing a sequel to the original video game.
The upcoming Paramount film represents another major step in turning Cyberpunk 2077 into a multimedia entertainment franchise.
Paramount Expands Its Video Game Movie Lineup
Paramount’s Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation joins Hollywood’s growing lineup of video game projects, following the success of The Last of Us, Fallout, and Sonic the Hedgehog.
The studio is also developing Street Fighter and a live-action Call of Duty movie, further expanding its investment in popular gaming franchises.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura brings extensive experience with blockbuster action and visual effects through his work on the Transformers franchise. His involvement could help bring Night City’s futuristic environments, cybernetic technology, and explosive action to life.
CD Projekt Red will also participate in production, helping maintain the world-building and atmosphere that made the original game successful.
Whether the movie follows familiar characters or introduces an entirely new story, Cyberpunk 2077 offers Paramount a massive sci-fi universe filled with cinematic possibilities.
No official release date, director, or cast has been announced.
