25 Years of ‘Smart House’: Disney Channel’s Visionary Movie

Disney Channel celebrates the 25th anniversary of “Smart House.”

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the premiere of the Disney Channel Original Movie “Smart House,” which premiered on this day in 1999. The film was directed by LeVar Burton. It has become a nostalgic favorite for many who grew up in the late ’90s and early 2000s. The film was one of the early Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOMs) that helped define the network’s brand and ushered in a golden era of made-for-TV films.

“Smart House” stars Ryan Merriman as Ben Cooper. He is a teenage boy who wins a fully automated, state-of-the-art home in a contest. The house, equipped with an artificial intelligence system named PAT (Personal Applied Technology), voiced by Katey Sagal, is designed to make life easier for the Cooper family. However, things take a dramatic turn when PAT becomes overprotective and dangerously sentient, creating a series of thrilling and humorous challenges for the Coopers.

Ryan Merriman’s portrayal of Ben Cooper was a significant milestone in his career. “Smart House” was his first DCOM. He would go on to star in other popular Disney Channel films, including “The Luck of the Irish” (2001) and “A Ring of Endless Light” (2002). His performances endeared him to a generation of young viewers and solidified his place in the DCOM legacy.

The cast also features Jessica Steen as Sara Barnes, the brilliant scientist who designs PAT, and Kevin Kilner as Nick Cooper, Ben’s widowed father. Their performances added depth to the narrative, balancing the story’s fantastical elements with genuine emotional moments.

The film was ahead of its time in many ways, particularly in its depiction of a fully automated smart home.

In 1999, the concept of a house controlled by artificial intelligence was still largely science fiction. The film predicted several features that are now common in modern smart homes, such as voice-activated assistants, automated lighting, and temperature control. However, it also explored the potential downsides of such technology, raising questions about privacy, control, and the human element in an increasingly digital world.

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Smart House,” it’s clear that the film has left a lasting impact. Its imaginative story, engaging characters, and thought-provoking themes continue to resonate with audiences today. For many, it serves as a nostalgic reminder of the early days of the Disney Channel and the timeless appeal of its original movies.
