The Lion King prequel, Mufasa, arrives this December.

Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” made a grand impression at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event with a new trailer and poster unveiled by director Barry Jenkins, songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, and an ensemble cast including Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Theo Somolu, Braelyn Rankins, and Anika Noni Rose. The film closed the studio’s presentation with an electrifying performance of the classic “Nants’ Ingonyama” and the new song “Ngomso” by Lebo M., featuring a full choir. Set to hit theaters on December 20, 2024, “Mufasa: The Lion King” delves into the origin story of the revered king of the Pride Lands. Rafiki narrates Mufasa’s tale to young lion cub Kiara, Simba, and Nala’s daughter, while Timon and Pumbaa add their trademark humor. The narrative unfolds in flashbacks, portraying Mufasa’s early life as an orphaned cub who crosses paths with Taka, a lion with royal lineage. This encounter sparks a sprawling adventure involving a diverse group of characters on a quest to find their purpose, facing trials as they confront a perilous adversary.
The cast at D23 also includes John Kani, Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Keith David, Donald Glover, Blue Ivy Carter, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis, Dominique Jennings, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. The film showcases a blend of live-action techniques and photorealistic CGI, promising a visually stunning experience.
