Echo – Series Review

All Five Episodes of Echo are now streaming on Disney+.

Marvel Studios’ latest series, “Echo,” explores the intricate life of Maya Lopez, portrayed by Alaqua Cox, as she faces challenges related to her identity, family, and a dangerous criminal organization run by Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). However, after watching the first three episodes, it becomes apparent why the decision was taken to release all five episodes simultaneously, as the show struggles to establish a solid foundation and present a compelling storyline.

Alaqua Cox delivers a magnetic performance as Echo in the new Marvel series. However, the show fails to meet expectations. It is unclear why this particular character deserved her own series, especially when it doesn’t match the high standards of previous Marvel shows. The TV-MA rating seems excessive as the series lacks the gritty and intense nature that defines the Netflix Marvel shows. This has led me to question why the show requires such a mature rating.

The arrival of Daredevil can be both thrilling and disappointing. It’s exciting to witness him in action, but it also underscores the frustration of not having a standalone Daredevil series, which fans have eagerly awaited. Marvel Studios appears to be taking a risk with shows that may not significantly impact the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series “Echo” has been praised for its gritty tone, but it falls short compared to its predecessors in the Marvel Netflix universe. The raw and visceral quality that made the Netflix titles so compelling is lacking in this series. The narrative feels disjointed, and rather than building on the momentum from Echo’s introduction in Hawkeye, the show inexplicably delays the storytelling, testing the patience of even the most dedicated Marvel fans. The show should have kicked off immediately after that shocking scene.

Verdict

I give Echo 2.5 out of 5 stars. Although the final two episodes offer some hope for redemption, it’s difficult not to crave a different direction for the show. A series focusing on Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, whose portrayal is a standout, could have added depth to the show’s character exploration. Unfortunately, “Echo” leaves viewers questioning the choices made by Marvel Studios and longing for the grounded storytelling expected to follow seamlessly from Hawkeye.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
