EuroTrip Celebrates 20th Anniversary

EuroTrip is a nostalgic journey across Europe.

On its 20th anniversary, we look back on the wild and wacky journey of “EuroTrip.” Clearly, this cult classic still holds a special place in the hearts of many comedy enthusiasts. This hilarious film was directed by Jeff Schaffer and written by Alec Berg and David Mandel. They take audiences on a whirlwind adventure across Europe, filled with laughs, friendship, and unforgettable moments. The movie starts with a relatable situation where Scott Thomas (played by Scott Mechlowicz) is dumped by his high school sweetheart, Fiona (played by Kristin Kreuk), at his graduation party. Seeking solace and adventure, Scott decides to go on a spontaneous trip across Europe with his friends Cooper (Jacob Pitts), Jenny (Michelle Trachtenberg), and Jamie (Travis Wester). Their goal is to locate Scott’s mysterious German pen pal, Mieke, whom he has mistaken for a man due to her masculine name.

The group embarks on a journey to explore the picturesque streets of London, the bustling nightlife of Amsterdam, and the romantic allure of Paris. However, their adventure is filled with a series of outrageous and entertaining misadventures. From mistakenly ingesting hallucinogenic substances at a nightclub to participating in an eccentric nude beach soccer game or accidentally getting mixed up with a group of football hooligans, each escapade adds to the comedic chaos. Undoubtedly, one of the most iconic elements of the film is the infectious anthem “Scotty Doesn’t Know.” The song is by the band Lustra. This catchy tune is the ultimate earworm throughout the film, perfectly encapsulating the carefree spirit of youth and adventure.

The ensemble cast delivers standout performances.

They bring each character to life with unique quirks and comedic timing. Mechlowicz shines as the lovable yet naive Scott. Pitts, Trachtenberg, and Wester also provide plenty of laughs as his loyal companions. Together, they form a dynamic group that audiences can’t help but root for as they navigate the highs and lows of their European escapade. The movie “EuroTrip” features a range of notable cameo appearances. It includes a particularly memorable one by Matt Damon as the lead singer of the punk rock band playing “Scotty Doesn’t Know.” Damon’s unexpected cameo adds an extra layer of hilarity to an already uproarious film. Other cameos include Vinnie Jones, Lucy Lawless, and Fred Armisen.

Although “EuroTrip” received mixed reviews and only earned a modest $20 million worldwide, it has gained a dedicated following. Its enduring popularity has cemented its place in the pantheon of comedy classics. As we celebrate its 20th anniversary, it’s evident that this classic comedy still brings joy and laughter to audiences worldwide. With its wacky shenanigans, unforgettable characters, and timeless soundtrack, it’s a movie that remains as entertaining and enjoyable today as it was two decades ago. Scotty may not know, but we certainly do – this film is a comedic gem that will stand the test of time.
