Farrelly Brothers Reunite to Write KINGPIN 2, Potentially Direct Sequel

EXCLUSIVE: The Farrelly brothers are getting back into the bowling business.

Thirty years after bringing one of the most outrageous sports comedies to the big screen, Peter and Bobby Farrelly are preparing to return to the world of KINGPIN.

During an exclusive interview with Nerdtropolis for his upcoming film I PLAY ROCKY, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Farrelly revealed that he and his brother Bobby are working together on KINGPIN 2, a long-awaited sequel to their 1996 cult classic.

Peter confirmed that the brothers are writing the new film together and expressed enthusiasm about the story they have developed. The possibility of both brothers returning to direct is also on the table, potentially setting the stage for a major reunion behind the camera.

The revelation is particularly exciting considering that the Farrelly brothers have not co-directed a feature film since DUMB AND DUMBER TO in 2014, which also marked their last shared feature screenplay credit.

If everything comes together, KINGPIN 2 could represent the brothers’ biggest creative reunion in more than a decade.

KINGPIN 2 Could Bring the Farrelly Brothers Back Together

Released in 1996, the original KINGPIN starred Woody Harrelson as Roy Munson, a once-promising professional bowler whose career comes crashing down after a disastrous encounter with rival Ernie McCracken, played by Bill Murray.

Years later, Roy discovers Ishmael Boorg, a gifted Amish bowler portrayed by Randy Quaid, and sees an opportunity to reclaim some of his former glory.

The unlikely partnership launches a cross-country adventure packed with outrageous characters, crude humor, unforgettable one-liners, and the kind of absurd comedy that became synonymous with the Farrelly brothers.

Vanessa Angel also starred as Claudia, while Chris Elliott and Lin Shaye appeared in memorable supporting roles.

Although KINGPIN wasn’t a massive box office success, earning approximately $32.2 million worldwide against a reported $25 million production budget, the film developed a devoted following and eventually earned its reputation as a cult comedy classic.

Its offbeat humor, memorable performances, and the ridiculous rivalry between Roy Munson and Big Ern McCracken have helped keep the movie relevant three decades later.

Now, the filmmakers behind the original are preparing to revisit the world they helped create.

A Major Reunion for the Comedy Filmmaking Duo

Peter and Bobby Farrelly helped define an entire era of American comedy with films including DUMB AND DUMBER, THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, ME, MYSELF & IRENE, SHALLOW HAL and STUCK ON YOU.

Their approach combined outrageous humor with surprisingly heartfelt characters, creating comedies that found lasting audiences long after their theatrical releases.

Their last film together as co-directors was DUMB AND DUMBER TO, which reunited Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels two decades after the original comedy became a cultural phenomenon.

In recent years, the brothers have largely pursued separate directing projects while continuing to collaborate in other capacities.

Peter went on to direct GREEN BOOK, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, followed by THE GREATEST BEER RUN EVER, RICKY STANICKY and I PLAY ROCKY.

Bobby directed CHAMPIONS and DEAR SANTA, the latter starring Jack Black and featuring Peter as a co-writer and producer.

While the brothers have remained connected creatively, KINGPIN 2 could mark a return to their signature collaborative filmmaking style.

Perhaps even more interesting is the opportunity to revisit one of their earliest films with decades of additional experience behind them.

Will Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray Return for KINGPIN 2?

One of the biggest questions surrounding KINGPIN 2 is whether the original cast will return.

Woody Harrelson’s Roy Munson and Bill Murray’s Ernie McCracken remain two of the movie’s most recognizable characters, while Randy Quaid’s Ishmael Boorg was central to its story.

Bringing those characters back together could provide the foundation for another outrageous bowling adventure, especially with three decades having passed since audiences last saw them.

However, no casting announcements have been confirmed, and it remains unclear whether the sequel will continue the original characters’ stories or introduce a new generation of bowlers.

Additional details about the plot, production timeline, studio involvement, and directing arrangements have not yet been announced.

For now, the most significant development is that Peter and Bobby Farrelly are writing a new KINGPIN movie together, with a possible directing reunion making the project even more promising.

The exclusive revelation came during Nerdtropolis’ conversation with Peter Farrelly about I PLAY ROCKY, his upcoming biographical drama exploring Sylvester Stallone’s extraordinary journey to bring ROCKY to the big screen while talking about the hope for more Rated-R Comedies.

The film stars Anthony Ippolito as a young Stallone and follows the aspiring actor and filmmaker as he fights to bring his underdog boxing story to life despite enormous obstacles and pressure from Hollywood.

I PLAY ROCKY releases in theaters November 20, 2026.
