Inside Foundation Season 3: Lee Pace and Laura Birn on sci-fi, humanity, and Asimov’s legacy.

Apple TV+ is gearing up to launch Season 3 of Foundation on July 11, 2025. The latest season delivers another visually spectacular chapter of Isaac Asimov’s legendary sci-fi saga. For stars Lee Pace and Laura Birn, this season is more than just new worlds and futuristic tech; it’s about what makes us human and why those truths still matter, even across the galaxy.
The series is based on Asimov’s award-winning books that redefined the sci-fi genre. Foundation follows a group of exiles fighting to preserve knowledge and guide humanity through the fall of the mighty Galactic Empire. For Lee Pace, the series captures exactly what makes Asimov’s work so timeless. “Asimov really helped create the idea of what science fiction would be,” he says. “It’s true to his idea — how extraordinary a human mind is, that it can wander out from one continent and eventually spread throughout the galaxy.”
Bigger Stakes and New Characters
Season 3 promises to raise the stakes, expanding the universe with more characters and epic storylines. “I think this season really ups the game,” Pace says. “It’s bigger — we’ve got some huge characters that enter the story, so I’m excited for people to see it.”

While Foundation has always wowed fans with stunning visuals and grand world-building, Birn believes its real beauty is what happens between the characters. “The beauty of the series is that it combines these beautiful grand worlds with the beings and the relationships between them,” she says. “Nothing is black and white. There’s no clear good guy or bad guy — everyone’s complex, like we are.”
Embracing Complexity in a Sci-Fi Epic
Birn points out that the moral gray areas in Foundation are exactly what keep audiences hooked. “We all have our egos; we try to do good things, but sometimes we have to make tough choices that aren’t so nice to get there,” she says. “That’s what makes it relatable — these are very human struggles set against this massive galaxy.”

Pace agrees and adds that great sci-fi always comes back to timeless human questions. “It’s a fun thought experiment,” he says. “How did we get here? How far can we go? And what does that say about us?”
A Show That Honors Asimov’s Legacy
For both stars, continuing Asimov’s vision feels like carrying the torch for a sci-fi icon whose ideas are still relevant today. “We as the makers of this show have a lot of freedom to continue that spirit and be as creative as we can possibly be with what he began,” Pace says.

With its mix of philosophical questions, jaw-dropping visuals, and layered characters, Foundation Season 3 looks ready to deliver exactly what sci-fi fans crave. It is a show that’s about people, not just planets. Whether you’re a longtime Asimov reader or just discovering this galaxy for the first time, the journey continues July 11 on Apple TV+, and it’s bound to spark some deep questions along the way.
