Futurama marks 25 tears since blasting off into TV’s orbit.

Twenty-five years ago today, TV screens across the galaxy lit up with the futuristic adventures of Fry, Bender, Leela, and the rest of the eclectic crew from Futurama. Matt Groening created it. He is the visionary behind The Simpsons. This animated sci-fi comedy first premiered on March 28, 1999, and quickly became a beloved cult classic.
Groening and co-creator David X. Cohen crafted a universe where anything was possible. Set in the 31st century, Futurama follows the misadventures of Philip J. Fry, a pizza delivery boy who gets cryogenically frozen and wakes up in the distant future. A colorful cast of characters joins him once he wakes up. It includes the kleptomaniac robot Bender, the one-eyed mutant Leela, and the incompetent Dr. Zoidberg. In the show, Fry navigates a world filled with alien beings, futuristic technology, and absurdity at every turn.

The show has a stellar voice cast.
They all bring the characters to life with impeccable comedic timing and wit. Billy West voiced Fry and many other characters, while John DiMaggio lent his talents to the gruff and lovable Bender. Katey Sagal portrays the tough yet compassionate Leela. “Futurama” delivered countless memorable moments over its seven-season run, from heartwarming episodes like “Jurassic Bark” to mind-bending tales like “The Late Philip J. Fry.” The show’s razor-sharp humor and clever satire earned it a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim. It garnered multiple Emmy Awards and cemented its status as a modern animated classic.
Fans fondly remember iconic lines like Bender’s “Bite my shiny metal ass” and Professor Farnsworth’s “Good news, everyone!” as well as the recurring theme of Fry’s love for his 20th-century girlfriend, Leela’s search for her true identity, and Bender’s constant quest for alcohol and mischief. Despite its initial cancellation in 2003, “Futurama” refused to stay in the past. The series was resurrected in 2008 with four direct-to-DVD movies, which paved the way for a triumphant return to television in 2010 thanks to Comedy Central. The revival breathed new life into the series, allowing fans to continue enjoying the adventures of their favorite characters for several more seasons.

In 2023, “Futurama” found another home on the streaming platform Hulu, which continues attracting longtime fans and new viewers alike. With its timeless humor, imaginative storytelling, and unforgettable characters, “Futurama” remains a shining example of animated excellence even as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.
