Gina Carano Opens Up About Finally Saying Yes to Ronda Rousey – INTERVIEW

Gina Carano returns for the fight fans never thought would happen against Ronda Rousey.

Before Ronda Rousey became a global UFC superstar, Gina Carano helped lay the foundation for women’s MMA to become a mainstream attraction.

She was the fighter who broke barriers before women regularly headlined arenas, pay-per-views, and streaming mega-events. Carano’s charisma, striking ability, and crossover appeal transformed her into one of the first true female combat sports stars, helping introduce millions of viewers to women’s mixed martial arts during its rise into pop culture relevance.

Now, years after leaving the sport behind for Hollywood, Carano is stepping back into the cage for a dream fight fans once believed would never happen.

During an interview with Nerdtropolis, Carano opened up about finally agreeing to face Ronda Rousey, rediscovering the discipline of fight life, and why this comeback arrived at exactly the right moment in her life.

And for Carano, this is not simply about stepping into another fight.

It is about rediscovering something she realized had been missing.

Gina Carano Says Something Was Missing After Leaving Fighting Behind

When asked what made now the right time to return, Carano admitted she originally walked away from combat sports believing that chapter of her life was over.

Instead, she slowly realized fighting had left a void behind after she retired.

“I had given up fighting about five years ago, and I realized something went kind of missing in my life,” Carano told Nerdtropolis.

That realization eventually collided with years of interest from Rousey, who Carano said had pursued the matchup for a long time.

“She’s been chasing me. She’s been wanting this fight for a very long time,” Carano said. “Not in a disrespectful way at all. In a respectful way. This is like a dream for her.”

Carano explained that the timing aligned during a difficult stretch in her personal life when she needed focus, discipline, and purpose again.

“I needed something to grasp ahold of,” she said. “I needed to get ahold of my body and my health.”

At first, agreeing to the fight felt like a challenge.

Then it became something deeper.

“I just didn’t know what a wonderful idea it was until now,” Carano said. “How deep, how special, how excited I am. How much I needed to actually do this.”

Fight Camp Brought Back Discipline and Purpose

Returning to training camp forced Carano into a dramatically different lifestyle than the one she had grown used to in Hollywood.

The actress described fight preparation as a complete stripping away of distractions and comforts, replacing them with a strict rhythm built entirely around training and recovery.

“Now it’s eat, sleep, train,” Carano said. “Hello to the parents, hello to the sisters, eat, sleep, train.”

Friends have barely seen her during camp because of the commitment required to prepare for a fight, carrying this much attention and expectation. Yet despite the sacrifices, Carano admitted she already knows she will miss this version of life when the event is over.

“I love the life that I’m living,” she said. “I’m already feeling like I’m going to miss it because of the discipline and the structure and the purpose.”

Rather than racing toward fight night, Carano said she has focused on appreciating the process itself.

“I’m really trying to enjoy the journey right now,” she said.

Gina Carano Is Still Searching for the Perfect Walkout Song

Even with one of the biggest fights of her life approaching, Carano still has not finalized one important detail.

Her walkout song.

According to Carano, fighters do not choose their walkout music.

The song chooses them.

“Walkout songs choose you,” Carano joked.

She revealed the track needs a certain kind of energy capable of instantly changing her mindset during training.

“It has to have a beat that makes you want to aggressively move your body,” Carano said.

Music remains a major emotional trigger for her while training, especially during exhausting sparring and padwork sessions.

“The right song comes on and all of a sudden life enters my body,” she said.

Carano also laughed while admitting she still does not even use Spotify, joking that she may finally need to “grow up” and start building playlists of her own.

From MMA Pioneer to Hollywood Action Star

Long before streaming platforms and billion-dollar franchises became part of her world, Carano was already helping reshape combat sports history.

Nicknamed “The Face of Women’s MMA,” Carano became one of the sport’s first crossover stars during her runs in EliteXC and Strikeforce. Her popularity helped prove women’s MMA could attract major audiences years before female fighters gained widespread support across the industry.

That success eventually led to Hollywood.

Carano made a successful transition into acting with Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire before starring in major productions including Fast & Furious 6, Deadpool, and The Mandalorian. Her physical presence and natural charisma quickly made her one of Hollywood’s most recognizable action stars.

Even after building a successful acting career, Carano explained that returning to fight camp reminded her of lessons she can still apply to filmmaking and creative work.

“The process of this is basically something I can take into moviemaking,” Carano said. “You work hard at it, you feel like you suck, you get better, you go through all this stuff, and then you do it.”

For Carano, this comeback is not just about fighting Rousey.

It is about reconnecting with the mindset that originally helped build both of her careers.
