Gladiator is a modern classic that is still roaring after 25 years.

Twenty-five years ago today, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator slashed its way into theaters and solidified itself as a modern cinematic classic. Released on May 5, 2000, the sweeping historical epic introduced moviegoers to the unforgettable journey of Maximus Decimus Meridius. He is a Roman general who falls from grace and rises once again through blood, betrayal, and vengeance.
Russell Crowe plays Maximus with stoic intensity. After the brutal murder of his wife and son, Maximus is a man of honor turned slave. Betrayed by Commodus, the power-hungry and morally corrupt son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Maximus vows revenge. What follows is a gripping tale that pits the disgraced general against the empire he once served as he becomes a champion in the gladiatorial arena and a symbol of resistance.

One of the film’s most quoted and powerful lines.
“I am Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions… father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next,” Crowe famously declares.

Directed by Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson, Gladiator featured a powerhouse cast alongside Crowe, including Joaquin Phoenix as the cruel and calculating Commodus, Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, Oliver Reed in his final role as Proximo, and Richard Harris as Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
The film was a global success.
It earned over $457 million at the worldwide box office. At the Academy Awards, it won Best Picture, Best Actor for Crowe, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. A quarter-century later, its impact on pop culture and modern filmmaking, especially in the realm of historical dramas, is still felt.

As Gladiator celebrates its 25th anniversary, you can catch Gladiator II on Paramount+. It is the long-awaited sequel slated to hit theaters later this year. The sequel, released in 2024, was directed once again by Ridley Scott. It stars Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Pedro Pascal and features a new chapter in the bloody saga of Rome’s arenas.
