Takashi Yamazaki’s epic kaiju masterpiece, “Godzilla Minus One,” has won the prestigious Oscar for Best Visual Effects, adding another accolade to its already impressive list of achievements. Yamazaki directed, wrote, and enhanced the visuals of the film himself. It has captivated audiences worldwide since its release in 2023.
This is the 37th installment in the iconic franchise and the fifth film in the Reiwa era.
The movie portrays postwar Japan grappling with the emergence of the legendary Godzilla, a theme deeply ingrained in Japanese culture. Its release in North America further solidified its status as a global phenomenon, grossing over $107 million worldwide against a modest budget of $10–12 million.
Not only has “Godzilla Minus One” become the highest-grossing Japanese film of 2023, but it has also surpassed its predecessor, “Shin Godzilla,” in box office success. Its victory at the Oscars for Best Visual Effects serves as a testament to Yamazaki’s unparalleled creativity and the collective effort of the talented team behind the film.
