Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart to Star in HBO’s New ‘Lanterns’ Series

Lanterns’ HBO series to bring Green Lantern icons to Max with 8 episodes.

James Gunn has officially announced that “Lanterns,” an HBO Original Series, will soon debut on Max. The series, developed by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, promises to bring the legendary DC Comics characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart to the small screen. Gunn, a master of superhero franchise revitalization and currently shooting Superman, made the announcement on Instagram. The series, a deep dive into the Green Lantern Corps, a pivotal element of DC Comics since its inception, is set to make a substantial mark. Another Lantern, Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, will appear in the new Superman film coming in 2025.

Hal Jordan, the first human Green Lantern, burst onto the scene in ‘Showcase’ No. 22 in 1959.

Writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane created him. A fearless test pilot, Jordan was handpicked by the dying alien Abin Sur to carry on his legacy. The power ring he received is a testament to his willpower and imagination, granting him incredible abilities. Jordan’s character, a flawed yet heroic figure, has been a linchpin in many Green Lantern storylines, and his mission to uphold justice across the cosmos is a constant struggle.

John Stewart, introduced in “Green Lantern” No. 87 in 1971, was created by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams. Stewart’s inclusion was groundbreaking as one of the mainstream comic’s first African American superheroes. An architect and former Marine, Stewart was selected as an alternate Green Lantern for Hal Jordan. Over time, he became a prominent and respected member of the Green Lantern Corps. He is known for his tactical acumen and unwavering dedication to his duties.

The series Lanterns aims to delve into these characters’ rich history and complex dynamics. “Lanterns” is anticipated to blend the thrilling action and deep emotional narratives fans expect from the Green Lantern mythos. It will follow John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they are drawn into an Earth-based mystery while investigating a murder in the American heartland. With the combined talents of Mundy, Lindelof, and King, the series promises to deliver a compelling and visually stunning adaptation of these iconic characters. As the DC Universe expands under Gunn, ‘Lanterns’ emerges as a highly anticipated project. It offers a fresh take on the timeless heroes of the Green Lantern Corps. Fans can eagerly anticipate a series that pays homage to the legacy of Hal Jordan and John Stewart while introducing their stories to a new generation.
