First-ever Magician’s Nephew adaptation brings Narnia’s origins to life in 2027.

Greta Gerwig is stepping into one of the most beloved fantasy worlds ever created. With Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, the Academy Award–nominated filmmaker delivers a sweeping origin story that will launch a new era for the iconic franchise.
The film will debut globally in IMAX and theaters on February 12, 2027, with exclusive IMAX sneak previews beginning February 10. It will then arrive on Netflix on April 2, 2027, marking a rare large-scale theatrical-to-streaming rollout designed to match the worldwide appeal of C. S. Lewis’s timeless stories.
A First-Ever Adaptation of a Foundational Story
For the first time, Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew is being adapted for the screen. Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, the film explores the creation of Narnia itself, diving into the origins of the magical world that has captivated readers for generations.

The story serves as a prequel to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, revealing how the connections between worlds first began. First published in 1955, the novel remains a cornerstone of The Chronicles of Narnia, which has sold more than 120 million copies worldwide.
All-Star Cast Brings Narnia to Life
The film introduces newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell while surrounding them with a powerhouse ensemble.
The cast includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma.
A Creative Team Built for Scale
Gerwig reunites with her Barbie collaborators Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who will compose the original score. Music supervision comes from George Drakoulias, adding another layer to the film’s immersive soundscape.
This release strategy reflects the scale of the property. By launching first in IMAX and theaters, then expanding to Netflix, the film aims to capture both the cinematic spectacle audiences expect and the accessibility of streaming.
The Legacy of C. S. Lewis Lives On
Created by C. S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia remains one of the most influential fantasy series ever written. Lewis authored more than 30 books and held academic positions at both Oxford and Cambridge, shaping literature and theology in the 20th century.
His Narnia series spans seven books, including Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Last Battle, each contributing to a rich, interconnected world that continues to inspire new generations.
