Heavyweights is the underrated gem that still packs a punch.

Three decades ago, on February 17, 1995, the comedy Heavyweights hit theaters, bringing an offbeat and heartfelt take on the classic summer camp movie. While it failed to make a significant splash at the box office, earning just $17.6 million, the film has since developed a devoted cult following that continues to appreciate its humor, standout performances, and inspiring message. Today, Heavyweights is easily accessible on Disney+, allowing a new generation to experience this hidden gem.
Co-written and produced by Judd Apatow, Heavyweights tells the story of a group of kids who arrive at Camp Hope, a traditional “fat camp” known for its supportive environment and fun summer traditions.
However, their experience takes a sharp turn when the camp is taken over by Tony Perkis (Ben Stiller), a fanatical fitness instructor whose cruel and militaristic methods make life miserable for the campers. What follows is a hilarious and heartwarming battle of wills, with the kids banding together to reclaim their summer.

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast.
It includes Tom McGowan, Aaron Schwartz as protagonist Gerry, and fan-favorite Shaun Weiss. The supporting cast features Tom Hodges, Leah Lail, Paul Feig, Kenan Thompson, David Bowe, Max Goldblatt, Robert Zalkind, Patrick LaBrecque, Jeffrey Tambor, and comedy legends Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara.
Ben Stiller’s portrayal of Tony Perkis is both hilarious and unhinged, with a performance so distinct that fans have long speculated his character is a precursor to his role as White Goodman in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004).
Though largely overlooked upon release, Heavyweights contains some of the most memorable comedic moments of the ’90s. From the infamous “Perkis System” training sequences to the over-the-top camp uprising, the film expertly blends slapstick humor with an underdog story that resonates to this day. Lines like “Lunch has been canceled due to lack of hustle” and “I see pride! I see power!” have become cult quotes among fans.

Shot at Camp Pinnacle in North Carolina, the film’s setting provides the perfect backdrop for its blend of chaos and camaraderie. Its ultimate message—that self-acceptance and friendship matter more than societal standards—remains as relevant as ever. The post-credits scene finds a disgraced Tony Perkis unsuccessfully selling healing crystals door-to-door, is the perfect epilogue to a character who learned nothing from his downfall.
Thirty years later, Heavyweights still stands tall as a film that celebrates individuality, resilience, and the joy of simply being yourself. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, it’s a must-watch that deserves its place in the comedy canon.
