Houston Cinema Arts Festival Returns with Reality Bites Anniversary Screening

Houston Cinema Arts Festival celebrates creativity with CineSpace Competition.

The Houston Cinema Arts Festival is returning for its 16th year. It will be taking place from November 7 to 17 at various locations across Houston. This annual event brings together film enthusiasts, industry professionals, and creatives to celebrate diverse storytelling, featuring an array of media installations, live performances, panel discussions, and workshops.

One of the major highlights this year is the 30th-anniversary screening of Reality Bites, the iconic 90s romantic comedy. The film will be shown at the recently renovated River Oaks Theater on November 8. Filmed in the River Oaks and Montrose areas, this nostalgic piece of Houston history was Ben Stiller’s directorial debut. It stars Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, and Stiller himself. For Garofalo, a former theater employee, the screening serves as a heartfelt homecoming.

The festival kicks off with the Texas premiere of Tendaberry.

It is a coming-of-age film by Houston-born filmmaker Haley Elizabeth Anderson. The screening on November 7 at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston will follow a Q&A session with Anderson and lead actress Kota Johan. The film debuted at Sundance and explores a young woman’s journey of survival in New York City.

A significant festival component is the CineSpace short film competition, presented in partnership with NASA. This unique competition invites filmmakers worldwide to create films using NASA’s archival footage. The winners will be announced during the closing night celebration on November 17 at The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. Filmmaker Richard Linklater will be among the judges. Another competition, Borders | No Borders, encourages filmmakers from Texas and neighboring regions to submit short films exploring the theme of borders. The event celebrates Houston’s diverse cultural landscape and has a track record of showcasing films that go on to win accolades at prestigious festivals. Houston native Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, known for his work on Shogun, is one of this year’s judges.

In addition to screenings, the festival will offer hands-on workshops, local artisan showcases, and live performances. These activities are designed to create an immersive experience, allowing attendees to connect with the festival’s creative energy in multiple ways. Learn More Here.
