Toothless returns in live-action How to Train Your Dragon.

The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon has unveiled a new trailer. It gives fans a fresh glimpse into the beloved saga’s reimagining. Directed and written by Dean DeBlois, the creative mind behind DreamWorks Animation’s acclaimed trilogy, this epic action-adventure film promises to transport viewers to the rugged isle of Berk with stunning visuals and cutting-edge effects.
The movie, set to release on June 13, 2025, features an ensemble cast led by Mason Thames (The Black Phone) as Hiccup and Gerard Butler (300), who reprises his iconic role as Stoick the Vast. Joining them are Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as Astrid and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) as Gobber, alongside a talented supporting cast.
The story revisits the classic tale of Hiccup.
He is an inventive Viking who befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon, and defies generations of hostility between humans and dragons. Together, they confront an ancient threat that could destroy their fragile world, forcing them to forge a path toward understanding and unity.
While the trailer showcases breathtaking landscapes, impressive dragon flights, and intense battles, one detail stands out—and not in the way you might expect. Toothless, the loyal Night Fury, appears nearly identical to his animated counterpart. While this decision might please diehard fans of the original films, some, including myself, were hoping for a more realistic reinterpretation of the dragon’s design. Given the film’s live-action format, seeing a lifelike version of Toothless could have added a layer of believability and depth to the adaptation.
Nevertheless, How to Train Your Dragon is shaping up to be a visual spectacle, especially with its inclusion in the Filmed for IMAX Program. DeBlois, along with producers Marc Platt (La La Land) and Adam Siegel (Drive), has the challenge of bringing this epic story to life while capturing the essence of Cressida Cowell’s books.
As the trailer continues to spark excitement and conversation, one thing is certain: How to Train Your Dragon has set the stage for a grand return to Berk. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the series, this live-action reimagining is bound to reignite the magic of Hiccup and Toothless’s legendary bond.
