Hugh Jackman rocks an ’80s look in Neil Diamond tribute biopic Song Sung Blue.

Well, Sweet Caroline, actor Hugh Jackman and actress Kate Hudson are starring (in song) in a new biopic. Produced by Focus Features, the trailer for the new film was just released on September 9th. The new project has many viewers chatting, including many who are unfamiliar with this heartfelt story. Here is everything you need to know about this epic upcoming biopic.
A Song Sung Blue You Don’t Want To Miss Hearing
The film follows Mike and Claire Sardina. They are a down-on-their-luck Milwaukee couple who—against all odds—form a Neil Diamond tribute band named Lightning & Thunder. And the trailer released for it is one that immediately grabs your attention, with Hudson stating to Jackman’s character that he doesn’t “want to be a Neil Diamond impersonator” but he wants to be a “Neil Diamond interpreter.” Hudson’s onscreen daughter is also shown in a few clips, with glimpses of parenthood sprinkled in.

The film, as indicated by the trailer, appears to be a joyful, music-fueled quest for love, meaning, and a little bit of magic. In the clips featured as well are the duo delivering spirited renditions of Neil Diamond hits like “Cherry, Cherry” and the indelible “Sweet Caroline.”
Hugh Jackman’s Transformation
Hugh Jackman undergoes a bold transformation. He is rocking shaggy waves and sideburns that channel 1980s-era Neil Diamond, and delivers an electrifying performance in the trailer as Mike. While Hugh Jackman is known for his theatre background, even performing musically for months at Radio City Music Hall in 2025 and 2026, he’s even more vibrant and musical in this new film.

He encapsulates full 80s flair, including replicating the same stage wear Neil Diamond wore. And Kate Hudson’s Claire isn’t to be outdone. She’s bright, aspirational, and knows she’s meant for more than her day job as a hairdresser. The aesthetics and costume design of this film are ones that immediately immerse you in this unforgettable era.
Behind the Scenes & Supporting Cast
The film is directed and written by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow). Song Sung Blue draws inspiration from the evocative 2008 documentary by Greg Kohs, who now serves as an executive producer. The ensemble is stacked with talent. It features Michael Imperioli, Fisher Stevens, Jim Belushi, Ella Anderson, Mustafa Shakir, rising star King Princess (in her acting debut), and Hudson Hensley all join the musical fun. Interestingly, ahead of the film, King Princess even duetted with Jackman live at Radio City Music Hall—hinting at genuine musical chemistry off-screen.
All in all, the trailer is one that immediately grabbed moviegoers’ attention, including ours. Song Sung Blue will be released in theaters on Christmas.
