‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Is A Fourth of July Thrill Worth Revisiting

Hooked on Horror: Revisiting ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ on July 4th.

As fireworks light up the night sky and the smell of barbecue wafts through the air, it’s the perfect time to revisit a classic thriller set against the backdrop of Independence Day. “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” released in 1997, remains a defining film of the ’90s teen horror genre. It was directed by Jim Gillespie and penned by “Scream” scribe Kevin Williamson. This film combines the festive summer spirit with a chilling tale of suspense and revenge. Grab a 4K copy here.

The movie begins with four friends—Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), and Barry Cox (Ryan Phillippe)—celebrating the Fourth of July in their small coastal town. Their night of revelry takes a dark turn when they accidentally hit a pedestrian with their car. Panicked, they decide to dispose of the body and swear to take their secret to the grave.

A year later, the friends have drifted apart, but their past returns to haunt them when Julie receives an anonymous note reading, “I know what you did last summer.” As they try to uncover the note’s sender, they realize someone is stalking them, seeking vengeance for the accident.

The cast features some of the biggest young stars of the ’90s.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is awesome as the main character Julie, which really solidified her as a scream queen. Sarah Michelle Gellar, hot off her success in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” brings depth to Helen’s character. Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Phillippe complete the main cast. They give unforgettable performances that perfectly capture the angst and fear of their characters. Director Jim Gillespie does an amazing job balancing suspense and teen drama to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Kevin Williamson’s script is known for its sharp dialogue and clever twists, adding some dark humor to the horror mix.

It was a box office hit.

The movie made over $125 million worldwide, even though it only had a budget of $17 million. It was so successful that it led to two sequels and a recent TV adaptation. Fun fact: the movie was based on a 1973 novel by Lois Duncan, but it took a lot of creative liberties with the story. The creepy “hook man” character was actually inspired by urban legends, which added an extra spooky element to the plot.

As you enjoy your Fourth of July festivities, consider revisiting “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” It’s a thrilling reminder that sometimes, our past actions come back to haunt us—especially on a night filled with celebration and fireworks. Stay tuned for more updates on the planned sequel.
