Fifteen years ago, on July 1, 2009, “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” premiered. It marks the third installment in the beloved Ice Age franchise. In “Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” Sid, voiced by John Leguizamo, stumbles upon three seemingly abandoned eggs and decides to adopt them. This decision leads him into a mysterious underground world where the eggs hatch into baby dinosaurs, and their enormous mother comes to retrieve them. The subterranean realm is teeming with lush vegetation and prehistoric creatures thought long extinct. As Manny (Ray Romano) and Diego (Denis Leary) embark on a mission to rescue Sid, they encounter new friends and foes alike.
A notable addition to the voice cast was Simon Pegg.
He brought to life Buck, a one-eyed, swashbuckling weasel with a penchant for danger. Buck quickly became a fan favorite, injecting a new level of humor and excitement into the series. Pegg’s dynamic performance as the eccentric weasel helped elevate the film’s charm. Buck would later get his own film.
“Dawn of the Dinosaurs” was a significant success at the box office. It grossed over $886 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise at the time. The film’s impressive earnings were bolstered by its appeal to both children and adults. Also, its release in 3D added a new dimension to the already visually stunning animation. The movie’s success reaffirmed the Ice Age series as a major player in animated film. The franchise’s blend of humor, heart, and adventure continued to captivate audiences, leading to subsequent sequels and spin-offs. “Ice Age: Continental Drift” followed in 2012, further expanding the prehistoric universe with new characters and settings.
The impact of “Dawn of the Dinosaurs” is not just about how much money it made.
It proved that animated movies can explore all kinds of different stories and places while still keeping the themes of friendship and family. When Buck showed up in the story, it made things more interesting and showed that the series could add in new characters that people would really remember and like.
As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” it’s clear that this film remains a beloved chapter in the Ice Age saga. Its success paved the way for future installments and solidified its place in the pantheon of animated classics. The adventures of Manny, Sid, Diego, and Buck continue to be cherished by fans old and new. Thanks to the franchise, fan-favorite Scrat would go on to get his own series.
