Jason Mewes opens up about recovery, gaming and his new YouTube series.

Jason Mewes has spent three decades turning a convenience store debut into a full-blown pop culture legacy.
Now, the actor, comedian, and longtime View Askewniverse favorite is back in familiar territory with a new twist. His YouTube series, “5 Things With Jay Mewes,” places him inside a working convenience store, where celebrity guests pick five items from the shelves that reflect who they are. The setup sounds simple. However, Mewes said the format has opened the door to personal stories, unexpected memories, and conversations that feel nothing like a normal press tour.
In an exclusive Nerdtropolis interview, Mewes opened up about the new series, Kevin Smith’s surprising stories, his love for “Murdoch Mysteries,” his push to get Jay and Silent Bob into “Fortnite,” his nearly 16-year sobriety milestone, and the new Jay and Silent Bob movie Smith has already written.
What Jason Mewes Revealed In This Interview
Mewes said “5 Things With Jay Mewes” became more personal than he expected because guests tell stories sparked by items on the shelves.
He revealed Kevin Smith has already written a new Jay and Silent Bob movie script, which Mewes described as “really funny.”
Mewes also shared the dream “Fortnite” concept for Jay and Silent Bob skins, including Suzanne the monkey as back bling and the “I assure you we’re open” sign as a glider.
In addition, he discussed how talking openly about recovery helped him stay accountable and inspired fans dealing with addiction.
Jason Mewes Says ‘5 Things With Jay Mewes’ Is Not A Typical Interview Show
“5 Things With Jay Mewes” premiered in March and featured guests including Kevin Smith, Adam Pally, Danny Trejo, Melissa Benoist, and more. Each episode follows Mewes and a guest through a convenience store as they pick five items that connect to their lives.
For Mewes, the setting is more than a wink to “Clerks.” It is also the kind of space that lets people loosen up.
“I’ve been wanting to do a podcast and do like an interview thing,” Mewes said. “But I think I don’t even know if I’d be good at someone sitting in front of me and me being like, ‘So tell me about this new project.’”
Mewes credited producers Jeff Vespa and John with helping shape the idea. He said they recognized how full circle it would feel to place him back in a convenience store setting.
“They were like, ‘Well, you started your career in a convenience store. We feel like this will be full circle,” Mewes said. “I was like, ‘That’s amazing.’”
The series quickly became more than he expected. Instead of asking the usual press-cycle questions, Mewes found that snacks, drinks, toys, and random store items could unlock stories guests might never tell otherwise.
Kevin Smith Told A Story Jason Mewes Had Never Heard
Mewes said Kevin Smith’s episode proved why the format works.
The two have known each other for more than 30 years. They have toured together, made films together, told stories together, and built one of the most recognizable duos in modern comedy. Still, “5 Things” brought out something new.
“Kevin is the best example,” Mewes said. “I’ve known Kevin over 30 years. We spend a lot of time together. We talk a lot on stage. We tell stories. I never knew about him going to Disney.”
According to Mewes, Smith saw a piece of crocodile candy and remembered a childhood Disney story involving his parents. The item unlocked a memory Mewes had never heard.
“Because he saw that crocodile candy, it reminded him of that, and he told me the story,” Mewes said. “I’m like, wow, I didn’t know this.”
That is the magic of the show. It does not chase sound bites. Instead, it lets nostalgia, taste, and personal history guide the conversation.
Steve-O Helped Shape The Show’s Hangout Feel
Mewes said the series evolved once Steve-O appeared as a guest.
At first, the show had guests pick five things and then move to a back room to discuss them. However, Mewes said that structure took away some of the natural energy.
Steve-O suggested they keep walking through the store and talk in the moment.
“It sort of took away from the element of just hanging out and walking through the store,” Mewes said. “Steve-O was like, ‘No, no, no. Let’s just go through it. Let’s talk about it.’”
That changed the show’s rhythm. Mewes said the conversation with Steve-O made him realize the concept had become something different.
“I was like, ‘Wow, this is something different,’” Mewes said. “I get to have a conversation, just hang out with people.”
That relaxed approach fits Mewes perfectly. He has built a career on fast talk, outrageous comedy, and total honesty. “5 Things” lets him blend those sides while also giving his guests room to be funny, sincere, and surprising.
Jason Mewes Says ‘Murdoch Mysteries’ Became A Dream Project
Mewes is also deep into another unexpected chapter of his career: “Murdoch Mysteries.”
The long-running Canadian mystery series became one of his favorite shows after he binge-watched 18 seasons. His fandom eventually led to a guest role as Slippery Bill Watson.
“I found the show, I watched, I binge-watched 18 seasons,” Mewes said.
The opportunity came after Mewes’ wife noticed a connection to someone involved with the show. Word got back to the creators that Mewes was a major fan, and they invited him to appear.
“I got to go up and be an actor in an episode as Slippery Bill Watson,” Mewes said. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, I get to be on one of my favorite shows.’”
Mewes said the set lived up to his hopes. He had appeared on other long-running TV shows before, but this experience felt different.
“This was so different,” Mewes said. “It was like, ‘Come sit behind the monitor. You need anything?’”
He now hosts a “Murdoch Mysteries” podcast and said he will return for another episode as Slippery Bill Watson.
“I’m excited because I get to go do another episode soon,” Mewes said.
Jason Mewes Wants Jay And Silent Bob In ‘Fortnite’
Mewes also remains fully locked into gaming.
During the conversation, Nerdtropolis brought up a previous discussion about getting Jay and Silent Bob skins into “Fortnite.” Mewes said he would still love to see it happen.
“Oh no, I would love to,” Mewes said.
He revealed that a friend had already created a mock-up for how Jay and Silent Bob could appear in the game. The concept included Jay and Silent Bob skins, the golden calf as a harvesting tool, and Suzanne the monkey as back bling.
The idea even included the famous “I assure you we’re open” sign from “Clerks” as a glider.
“I was like, this is genius,” Mewes said.
While “Fortnite” has not happened yet, Mewes said getting into “Call of Duty” was a major thrill.
“I love ‘Fortnite,’ but I actually do, ‘Call of Duty’ is what I’ve been playing even longer than ‘Fortnite,’” Mewes said. “So at least I got to be in ‘Call of Duty,’ which is awesome.”
Mewes also praised “Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch,” the video game he streamed when it launched.
“They did such a great job,” Mewes said.
Jason Mewes Opens Up About Nearly 16 Years Sober
Mewes has also become a meaningful voice for fans who have followed his recovery journey.
During the interview, he reflected on how openly sharing his struggles helped not only himself, but also people who saw him as proof that change is possible.
Mewes said conventions and meet-and-greets often lead to emotional moments with fans.
“One out of every 50 people will be like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have three years sober, man, and your podcast is a big help to me,’” Mewes said.
At first, Mewes did not know if opening up was the right move. He worried that being honest about addiction could hurt his acting career.
“I wanted to try to be an actor,” Mewes said. “I wanted to get more movies, and no one’s going to want me to be in their movie if they think I’m a junkie.”
Kevin Smith encouraged him to speak honestly and stop carrying the weight of secrecy.
Mewes said that the decision changed everything. Public accountability became one of the tools that helped him stay sober.
“In the beginning, I thought it was just me opening up and being accountable to people to help myself,” Mewes said. “I had no idea that people would be like, ‘Oh my God, you sharing that and letting me know how good you’re doing really helped me.’”
Mewes said July 2 will mark 16 years sober.
Jason Mewes Says Kevin Smith Has Written A New Jay And Silent Bob Movie
The biggest tease came near the end of the conversation, when Mewes discussed the future of Jay and Silent Bob.
After their cameo in “The 4:30 Movie,” fans have wondered when the duo might return in a bigger way. Mewes said he hopes the next movie happens soon.
He referred to the project as “Jay and Silent Bob’s Store Wars.”
“I feel like we definitely need to get one more Jay and Bob movie,” Mewes said.

Even better, the script already exists.
“I’ve read the script,” Mewes said. “Kevin’s already written the script, and it’s really funny.”
Mewes said Smith, his wife Jordan Monsanto, and producer Liz Destro have been working hard to bring the movie together. He hopes they can shoot before the end of the year.
“Who knows, maybe in 2027, some summer of 2027, maybe there’ll be a new Jay Bob movie,” Mewes said.
Jason Mewes Is Still Building New Chapters
Jason Mewes could have stayed frozen in time as Jay, the foul-mouthed, fast-talking half of Jay and Silent Bob. Instead, he keeps finding new ways to grow.
“5 Things With Jay Mewes” turns the convenience store into a place for real connection. His “Murdoch Mysteries” work shows the joy of a fan getting to step inside a world he loves. His gaming passion keeps Jay and Silent Bob connected to new platforms. His honesty about recovery continues to make an impact far beyond movies and podcasts.
Mewes remains funny, loose, and completely himself. However, the deeper story is how much he has evolved while still holding onto the energy that made fans love him in the first place.
And if “Jay and Silent Bob’s Store Wars” comes together, Mewes and Smith may have one more big-screen adventure left in them.
