National Geographic dives deep with JAWS @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Jaws is back in the spotlight. To mark the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s game-changing thriller, National Geographic is premiering JAWS @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story, the only authorized documentary about the making and legacy of the original summer blockbuster.
Premiering July 10 at 9/8c on National Geographic and streaming the next day on Disney+ and Hulu, this 90-minute documentary is part of the network’s annual SHARKFEST programming and promises to deliver the most comprehensive deep dive into the film that forever changed cinema and our relationship with sharks.
A Bigger Boat, A Bigger Legacy
Produced in partnership with Spielberg’s Amblin Documentaries, Nedland Films, and Peter Benchley’s widow, Wendy Benchley, JAWS @ 50 is directed by Laurent Bouzereau (Faye, Music by John Williams). The film traces the evolution of Jaws from Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel to a pop culture juggernaut that redefined what a summer movie could be.
With access to never-before-seen home videos, rare outtakes, and personal archives from Spielberg and Benchley, the documentary provides a raw, honest look at the chaos, creativity, and near-disaster surrounding the production. Spielberg himself reflects on the pressures of directing at such a young age, the nightmare of a malfunctioning mechanical shark, and the post-production anxiety that made him fear his career was over before it began.
A Filmmaker’s Reflection—and a Cultural Ripple
“People think they know the story of Jaws,” said Bouzereau. “But there’s still so much left beneath the surface. This film isn’t just about how Jaws was made—it’s about what it made possible.”
Alongside Spielberg’s candid interviews, the documentary features commentary from original cast and crew members, including production designer Joe Alves, screenwriter Carl Gottlieb, Lorraine Gary, Jeffrey Kramer, and even Ian Shaw, son of the late Robert Shaw (Quint).

Also weighing in are today’s top filmmakers and superfans—J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, George Lucas, Guillermo del Toro, James Cameron, Emily Blunt, Steven Soderbergh, Cameron Crowe, Greg Nicotero, Robert Zemeckis, and composer John Williams—who all credit Jaws with shaping their creative paths and the very language of modern film.

From Fear to Fascination: The Shark Legacy
Beyond Hollywood, JAWS @ 50 explores how the film’s once-feared impact on shark perception has evolved into a powerful force for marine conservation. Interviews with shark experts, conservationists, and scientists—including Philippe Cousteau, Dr. Greg Skomal, Candace Fields, and Brian Skerry—reveal how Jaws sparked both fear and fascination, inspiring decades of research and advocacy.

The Benchley family, including Wendy Benchley and their children Tracy and Clayton, also share intimate reflections on Peter Benchley’s journey from author of a shark thriller to one of the ocean’s most passionate defenders.
A Must-Watch Tribute
Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a first-time viewer, JAWS @ 50 offers something new: a nostalgic, heartfelt, and thought-provoking look at the film that invented the summer blockbuster and inspired waves of storytellers, scientists, and shark lovers worldwide.
So get ready to revisit the waters off Amity Island—and the moment Hollywood changed forever.
JAWS @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story premieres Wednesday, July 10, on National Geographic and streams July 11 on Disney+ and Hulu.
