Behind the scenes of Parks and Recreation with Jim O’Heir.

Jim O’Heir is an Emmy-winning actor. He is beloved for his role as Jerry Gergich on NBC’s Parks and Recreation. He is delighting fans once again with his new book, Welcome to Pawnee: Stories of Friendship, Waffles, and Parks and Recreation. The book, published by William Morrow, offers a heartfelt exploration of his seven seasons on the sitcom. It provides an intimate look into what made the show so special.

In an interview, O’Heir shared the inspiration behind the book and the labor of love that went into its creation. “This is my love letter to the show,” he said, recalling how Parks and Recreation changed his life and career. Known as the “office punching bag” on the show, Jerry’s character provided endless laughs. His character also revealed an unexpectedly sweet personal life that resonated with audiences. O’Heir’s portrayal made Jerry a fan favorite, cementing the character as a pop culture icon.

O’Heir’s journey into the Parks and Rec family began with his audition for the role of Ron Swanson.

Nick Offerman’s legendary performance has made the character now inseparable from him. Though he was not cast as Swanson, O’Heir’s audition left an impression, eventually earning him the role of Jerry. Looking back, he credited the creators and casting director Allison Jones for championing him: “She literally pitched me, saying, ‘You’ve got to see this guy.’ I never knew that until working on the book.”

The book offers fans plenty of behind-the-scenes insights, from casting revelations to anecdotes from filming. O’Heir noted, “I learned so much about the show that I never knew, even after being in every episode.” Readers will also find 60 exclusive photos, many taken by O’Heir and his castmates, adding a visual treasure trove to the heartfelt stories.

Reflecting on the camaraderie of the Parks and Rec cast, O’Heir highlighted their enduring bond. “To this day, we have the Parks family text, and we’re always in touch,” he said. This connection shines through in the show’s humor and warmth, which O’Heir credits as a key reason for its lasting success. O’Heir also teased some of the raw and emotional moments covered in the book, including a deeply personal story involving Amy Poehler. “Amy is just the loveliest human being,” he shared, hinting at a chapter that showcases her kindness during a challenging time for him and co-star Retta. “If you want to know who Amy Poehler is as a person, read the last couple of chapters.”

Beyond Parks and Rec, O’Heir continues to stay busy, but it’s clear the sitcom holds a special place in his heart. “Parks broke through the barrier,” he said, marveling at its ongoing global popularity through syndication and streaming. The book’s cover, which features a whimsical caricature of the cast, has already garnered praise. “It’s filled with Easter eggs for die-hard fans,” O’Heir said, proudly describing the inclusion of beloved elements like DJ Roomba and Lil’ Sebastian.

For audiobook fans, O’Heir took the reins, narrating the book himself.

The audio version includes guest voice performances for added authenticity. “I like when an author tells their own story, especially something as personal as this,” he explained. Welcome to Pawnee releases today on November 19 and is available at major retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Books-a-Million. It’s a must-read for Parks and Recreation enthusiasts, offering an emotional and comedic journey back to Pawnee. As Jim O’Heir put it, “Buy two copies—one to showcase and one to read—and don’t forget the audiobook!”
