John Cena and Awkwafina Shine in Paul Feig’s Dystopian Comedy Jackpot – Review

Jackpot is a fun and high-energy comedy with a killer twist.

Who knew that John Cena and Awkwafina would make such a fantastic comedic duo in Jackpot, a full-throttle and high-stakes comedy directed by Paul Feig? Premiering globally on Prime Video on August 15, 2024, Jackpot is another entry in Feig’s impressive filmography, known for hits like The Heat and Spy. This film introduces audiences to a new favorite comedy pairing, with Cena and Awkwafina bringing their unique energies to the screen.

The movie is set in near-future California, where a new “Grand Lottery” has a deadly twist.

The premise is simple yet absurdly entertaining: whoever wins the lottery must survive until sundown or risk being hunted down by those eager to claim the multi-billion dollar prize. Awkwafina stars as Katie Kim, a recent transplant to Los Angeles, who unexpectedly finds herself holding the winning ticket. To survive the day, she teams up with Noel Cassidy, an amateur lottery protection agent played by John Cena.

John Cena’s comedic timing is, once again, on point. Jackpot is another fun film where he flexes his ability to blend humor with action, making him a delight to watch. Cena’s Noel is a lovable goofball with a heart of gold, determined to protect Katie for his share of the winnings. The chemistry between Cena and Awkwafina is one of the film’s highlights, with their contrasting personalities creating plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

Awkwafina, playing the sarcastic and street-smart Katie, brings her usual flair to the role. While her performance is entertaining, it does feel like she’s treading familiar ground. Awkwafina excels in comedic roles, but those who have seen her more dramatic work might find themselves wishing for a bit more depth from her character in Jackpot. Simu Liu also shines in his role as Louis Lewis, Noel’s slick rival, who adds another layer of tension and excitement to the plot. Liu’s performance is a standout, providing the right mix of charm and menace.

The jokes throughout are mostly hits, with Paul Feig pushing the boundaries of comedy in this dystopian setting. The film pokes fun at real-world issues in a way that feels fresh and relevant. However, while Jackpot is undeniably fun, it lacks the spectacle and memorability of some of Feig’s best work. It’s an enjoyable ride, but not one that will likely stay with you for long.

Verdict

I give Jackpot 3.5 out of 5 stars. It is a solid, entertaining film with plenty of laughs, thanks largely to its stellar cast. While it might not be a comedy classic, it’s worth a watch for the dynamic duo of John Cena and Awkwafina.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
