John Wick Returns to Theaters for 10th Anniversary: Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane and Chad Stahelski Celebrate Legacy – Interview

‘John Wick’ returned to theaters for 10th anniversary celebration.

A decade has passed since the release of John Wick, the movie that redefined the action genre. Fans had a unique opportunity to experience the film on the big screen once more. Hosted by Fathom Events, the exclusive 10th-anniversary screenings took place on November 3rd. An additional showing is scheduled for November 6th, 2024. To mark the occasion, stars Keanu Reeves and Ian McShane participated. Director Chad Stahelski and producer Erica Lee also joined fans. They were part of a sold-out Q&A session at the AMC Century City in Los Angeles. Moderated by Grae Drake, the conversation provided an intimate look. It explored the journey of bringing John Wick to life. It also highlighted how its impact endures today.

Reflecting on the film’s lasting impact, Keanu Reeves expressed gratitude for the chance to revisit John Wick with fans. “It’s really great that the film is having the opportunity to be seen on the big screen where it was made for. Time flies when you’re having fun,” Reeves shared. He recalled early discussions with Stahelski about the vision for the movie, describing it as an exciting collaboration time to bring an action-packed yet stylized world to life. “We love the script and the character and the world so much,” he said, adding that the movie’s success and fans’ dedication have been “an amazing experience.”

Erica Lee echoed Reeves’ sentiments.

She highlighted how John Wick initially gained traction through home video and streaming, only reaching a wider audience after its theater run. She pointed out how Stahelski’s dedication to constantly raising the bar has been instrumental in the film’s success, describing how he taught her “to always push…you push harder.” Reflecting on the franchise’s progression, Lee emphasized how each film has gone “bigger and bolder” with action sequences, locations, and technical craft, making a theatrical experience a fitting way to celebrate John Wick’s legacy.

Ian McShane, who plays the enigmatic Winston, reminisced about his initial reaction to the film. “It was a good script. I figured if it came together, it would work out,” he recalled. McShane noted that the franchise’s success allowed for his character to evolve and hinted at excitement for Ballerina, the upcoming spin-off featuring Ana de Armas. “It’s been a pleasure,” he said of the role, praising Stahelski’s direction and the cast’s camaraderie.

Director Chad Stahelski shared his perspective on the journey.

He described the film as “a dream career” opportunity. He spoke of his vision to create an action movie that audiences could experience with a crowd and enjoy on multiple levels. Stahelski’s approach to building the John Wick universe has allowed the story to expand in ways fans could appreciate, from exploring the underworld’s “high table” to introducing new characters with unique perspectives.

However, the celebration felt incomplete without one notable absence. The late Lance Reddick, who portrayed the iconic concierge Charon, was on everyone’s minds. Known for his calm intensity and steady presence, Reddick’s character played a pivotal role throughout the series, serving as both an ally and confidant to John Wick. Reddick brought unique depth to his role, making Charon a character fans immediately connected with.

With an undeniable influence on the action genre and a loyal fanbase, John Wick’s return to theaters proved that the legendary assassin’s legacy lives on. As the franchise expands, including the anticipated Ballerina spinoff, the world of John Wick shows no sign of slowing down.
