Jurnee Smollett on Her Explosive New Role in Smoke – INTERVIEW

Jurnee Smollett on playing a flawed, fearless detective in Smoke.

Jurnee Smollett has never shied away from powerful, emotionally raw roles—and in Apple TV+’s latest series, Smoke, she adds another unforgettable character to her resume. Smollett stars as Detective Michelle Calderon, a complex, driven investigator whose obsession with the job—and her own demons—pulls her into dangerous territory.

In Smoke, premiering June 27, Smollett is joined by Taron Egerton (Rocketman, Black Bird) as arson investigator Dave Gudsen. Inspired by true events, the series follows the duo as they chase down two serial arsonists. What unfolds is a high-stakes psychological thriller filled with emotional depth and gripping performances.

“I know people like Michelle,” Smollett told Nerdtropolis during our Reel Insights interview. “I see myself in her. She’s a workaholic. She has attachment issues. And like so many of us, she’s drawn to the very things that could destroy her.”

Smollett’s portrayal of Calderon digs deep into themes of self-destruction and ambition, painting a raw portrait of a woman caught in a spiral between justice and obsession.

A Dynamic Duo on Screen

Despite the intensity of their on-screen dynamic, Smollett said her collaboration with Egerton was remarkably fluid from day one.

“We didn’t meet until the table read,” she explained. “Which worked perfectly, because our characters were meeting for the first time too. You can’t bottle up chemistry—it’s either there or it’s not. And with Taron, it was electric.”

The pair’s cat-and-mouse energy adds another layer to the show’s suspense, creating a push-pull tension that keeps audiences guessing.

“Off-camera, he’s my homie,” Smollett laughed. “But on screen, it was all about who’s going to get into whose head first.”

A Storied Career with Even More to Come

Jurnee Smollett has been captivating audiences since the 1990s, first gaining recognition as a child star in Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper and Full House. She went on to earn acclaim in shows like Friday Night Lights, True Blood, and Underground and was nominated for an Emmy for her riveting performance in HBO’s Lovecraft Country. Whether it’s superhero action in Birds of Prey or historical drama, Smollett brings intensity, depth, and authenticity to every role.

Her latest turn in Smoke is no exception.

“Viewers have no idea where this is going—buckle up.,” Smollett said, expressing excitement over the series’ June debut.

With a stellar cast that also includes Rafe Spall, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Anna Chlumsky, Greg Kinnear, and John Leguizamo, Smoke is already generating buzz as one of the summer’s must-watch thrillers.

For Smollett, it’s another standout role in a career filled with fearless choices and powerful performances. Smoke begins streaming on June 27 exclusively on Apple TV+.
