Katherine McNamara Talks ‘High Ground,’ the Arrowverse, and Westerns – Interview

From Arrow to High Ground, Katherine McNamara’s journey through action-packed roles.

Katherine McNamara, best known for her roles in Arrow, Walker Independence, and Shadowhunters, is no stranger to action-packed projects. Her latest film, High Ground, directed by James Bamford, is now available on digital. In a conversation about the movie, McNamara shared insights into working with Hollywood legends, her love for Westerns, and her hopes for returning to the Arrowverse.

A Story About Community

McNamara, who has worked with Bamford since her Arrow days, described High Ground as more than just a modern Western. “It’s a story about community and about being there for the people that you love,” she said. “As divisive as the world becomes, we often forget that despite our differences, community is how we survive in the end.”

The film features an impressive cast, including Jon Voight, Charlie Weber, Henry Thomas, and Dustin Ingram. McNamara spoke highly of Voight, calling it an honor to work alongside the Hollywood icon. “To have someone so iconic who still shows up is so present and so willing to play is a true gift,” she said, recalling how Voight personally called her before production to discuss their characters.

Filming in Bulgaria

Though High Ground is set in the American West, the film was shot in Bulgaria. McNamara, who had previously filmed projects in the country, praised the film community there. “Some of the best stunt crews and most skilled technicians I’ve ever worked with are in Bulgaria,” she said. “The set lot we used might as well be a mini Universal lot, with different streets and neighborhoods from around the world.”

A Love for Westerns

McNamara’s love for the Western genre runs deep, thanks in part to her role as Abby Walker in Walker Independence. “I watched quite a few Westerns while prepping for Walker Independence because we really wanted to bring the spirit of the classic American Western into that show,” she said.

Transitioning from a Western period to a modern one in High Ground was a unique experience. “Going from the 1870s to the 2000s was different, but it’s still about the characters and the community. No matter the era, it’s always about people protecting their home and loved ones.”

Reflecting on the Arrowverse

McNamara also reminisced about playing Mia Smoke in the Arrowverse, particularly during Crisis on Infinite Earths. “I will never forget looking around and seeing the Flash, Superman, Lois, the White Canary—it was a pinch-me moment,” she said. “I love the lore of the Green Arrow, and I was grateful that Mia was created with such care to stay true to that legacy.”

If given the chance, McNamara already knows where Mia’s story should go next. “William is still missing. My brother is still being held hostage by someone. Mia is stubborn as hell—she’s never going to stop until she finds him,” she said. “It’s got to be either his superhero or supervillain origin story.”

Looking Ahead

With High Ground now available on digital, Katherine McNamara remains busy with upcoming projects. Whether it’s a Western, a superhero saga, or another action-packed adventure, she brings undeniable passion to each role. And as for a return to the Arrowverse? “Let’s do it. I volunteer as tribute.”
