Jean-Claude Van Damme Kickboxer Turns 35: Belgium Star’s Journey from Unknown to Action Star

Van Damme, Tong Po, and the art of Muay Thai in Kickboxer.

Kickboxer, the 1989 action-packed martial arts film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, celebrates its 35th anniversary today. Mark DiSalle and David Worth directed this cult classic. It tells the story of Kurt Sloane. He is a man who seeks vengeance for his brother Eric’s brutal injury at the hands of a ruthless Muay Thai champion, Tong Po. The film is a staple in martial arts cinema and marks Van Damme’s continued rise as a global action star after Bloodsport.

Jean-Claude Van Damme, who plays Kurt Sloane, was relatively unknown then. He had gained some attention from his breakout role in Bloodsport, but Kickboxer cemented him as one of the premier action heroes of the era. Van Damme’s charm, athleticism, and signature martial arts style made him a fan favorite. The film’s success propelled him into a string of successful movies throughout the late ’80s and ’90s.

The plot of Kickboxer revolves around Kurt’s transformation from a supportive brother to a lethal fighter. After his brother Eric, portrayed by Dennis Alexio, a world champion kickboxer, is paralyzed by Tong Po, played by Michel Qissi, Kurt embarks on a quest to learn the art of Muay Thai. The journey takes him deep into the heart of Thailand, where he trains under the wise and strict Master Xian Chow, portrayed by Dennis Chan. The training sequences in the film are memorable and have become iconic in the martial arts genre, particularly the scenes where Kurt must endure harsh conditioning methods to toughen his body and spirit.

The story of Tong Po’s casting.

Tong Po, Kurt’s nemesis, is one of the most intimidating villains of the genre. Michel Qissi, originally a technical advisor for the film, ended up playing the role after the production team struggled to find an actor tall enough to portray the imposing Tong Po. Qissi volunteered for the role, and his menacing portrayal of the Muay Thai champion elevated the film.

Kickboxer was not just a hit with martial arts fans; it also performed well at the box office. With a modest budget, the film earned over $50 million worldwide. It had a strong showing that solidified Van Damme’s star power and laid the foundation for his future success in Hollywood. The film’s blend of heart, drama, and intense fight sequences made it a hit among audiences and critics alike.

Looking back, Kickboxer remains a quintessential film in the martial arts genre. It is full of nostalgia for those who grew up watching Van Damme. The film’s enduring popularity has inspired numerous sequels, remakes, and reboots. Still, nothing quite matches the original’s raw intensity and emotional core. It showcased Van Damme’s physical abilities and marked the beginning of his storied career as one of Hollywood’s top action stars. As Kickboxer turns 35, its legacy as a defining film of the late ’80s remains intact. You can stream the movie on Prime Video or grab the Steelbook.
