Netflix Announces KPop Demon Hunters Sequel After Record-Breaking Global Success

KPop Demon Hunters sequel set with original directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.

Netflix is officially bringing back the world of KPop Demon Hunters.

The streaming giant confirmed a sequel to the animated phenomenon following its historic success across streaming, music charts, and awards recognition. The new film will reunite directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who will return to expand the universe that introduced audiences to the unstoppable K-pop trio HUNTR/X.

The sequel will also mark the first project under Netflix’s new multiyear writing and directing partnership with Kang and Appelhans across animation.

A Global Phenomenon That Broke Records

Since its debut in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters has become the most popular Netflix film of all time. The animated adventure has surpassed 500 million views worldwide, turning the original story into a global pop-culture event.

However, the film’s impact extended far beyond streaming numbers.

The fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X made music history as well. The group became the first K-pop girl group to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Meanwhile, the song “Golden” won a Grammy Award, becoming the first K-pop song to achieve that milestone.

Additionally, the film continues its awards run with two Oscar nominations, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.”

Directors Return to Continue the Story

Maggie Kang expressed excitement to Netflix about returning to the world she helped create.

She said the overwhelming response from audiences around the world has made continuing the story even more meaningful.

Kang shared that the sequel offers an opportunity to expand the universe and explore the characters further. As a Korean filmmaker, she also said she feels proud to see audiences embrace a story rooted in Korean culture and characters.

Chris Appelhans echoed that enthusiasm. He described the characters and their world as something deeply personal for the creative team. According to him, the next chapter will push the characters into new challenges while continuing to blend music, animation, and storytelling in ambitious ways.

A Story That Mixed Pop Stardom and Supernatural Action

The original film followed HUNTR/X, a massively popular K-pop girl group made up of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. While fans saw them as chart-topping performers who sold out stadiums, they secretly lived double lives as demon hunters.

Their mission was to protect their fans from supernatural threats lurking in the shadows.

The trio eventually faced their most dangerous enemy yet: the Saja Boys, a rival boy band that turned out to be demons disguised as pop idols.

The mix of pop music spectacle, supernatural action, and emotional character storytelling helped the film stand out among animated releases.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation Expand the Universe

Netflix leaders say the success of KPop Demon Hunters created a fandom unlike anything they expected.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said the film did more than reach audiences. She said it sparked a worldwide fandom that crossed generations, languages, and genres.

Meanwhile, Dan Lin, chairman of Netflix Film, credited the filmmakers for taking a bold creative swing with a story that felt personal while also breaking cultural barriers.

Sony Pictures Animation, which partnered with Netflix on the first film, will again collaborate on the sequel. Studio presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville praised Kang and Appelhans for bringing distinct perspectives that resonated with audiences across the globe.

They added that the next installment will continue expanding the creative vision that made the original film such a breakthrough success.

The Next Chapter for HUNTR/X

For fans, the biggest takeaway is simple: HUNTR/X is not going anywhere.

Although the characters may deserve a break after saving the world and dominating the charts, their story is far from finished.

With the original directors returning and a growing global fandom waiting for more, the sequel promises to push the music, action, and storytelling even further.

And judging by the response to the first film, the chants for more HUNTR/X are only getting louder.
