Liam Neeson leads ‘The Naked Gun’ reboot from Family Guy creator.
Paramount Pictures is set to revive the beloved Naked Gun franchise with a new reboot. It stars Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. and simply titled The Naked Gun. The legacy reboot will be released in theaters on August 1, 2025.
The comedy is directed by Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane. The upcoming film aims to bring back the slapstick comedy and absurd humor that made the original trilogy a cult classic. Neeson is best known for his intense action roles in Taken and The Grey. He will now step into the comedic shoes once worn by the late Leslie Nielsen, who portrayed the bumbling yet heroic Lt. Frank Drebin in the original films.

The reboot boasts an ensemble cast. It features Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston. Dan Gregor, Doug Mand, and director Akiva Schaffer penned the script. This film promises a fresh take on the franchise while paying homage to the original.
The franchise began with The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! in 1988, a film adapted from the short-lived TV series Police Squad! The movie and its sequels, The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991) and Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994), became comedy staples thanks to Nielsen’s deadpan delivery and the films’ signature brand of slapstick and wordplay.
The Naked Gun reboot looks to bring the franchise’s signature blend of action and absurdity to a new generation. Fans will have to wait until the August to see if Neeson’s “particular set of skills” includes nailing the franchise’s iconic comedic timing.
