Lisa Frankenstein opens in theaters on February 9th.

Lisa Frankenstein, directed by Zelda Williams, is a delightful graveyard smash that serves up a wickedly fun blend of 80s nostalgia, romance, and horror elements. With a stellar cast led by Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse, this film marks Williams’s killer feature-length directorial debut. Set against a backdrop of neon hues and synthesizer beats, Lisa Frankenstein transports viewers back to the heyday of the 1980s with its infectious energy and retro charm. While the film could have benefited from more diverse 80s locations, it undeniably captures the era’s essence with its vibrant aesthetic and infectious soundtrack.
Newton and Sprouse portray an unconventional romance with undead chemistry at its finest. Sprouse’s portrayal of the undead heartthrob is noteworthy. He perfectly embodies the complexities of his character with a blend of charm and vulnerability. Newton shines as the misunderstood teenager caught up in a whirlwind of supernatural chaos. She delivers what may be her most captivating performance to date. Liza Soberano also deserves praise for her standout performance, adding depth and intrigue to the ensemble cast. Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest, and Carla Gugino round out the talented cast, each bringing their unique flair to their respective roles.
Despite being a comedy film, Lisa Frankenstein has enough horror elements to please fans of the genre. Diablo Cody’s clever script enriches the movie by adding humor and touches on self-discovery, acceptance, and love themes. The result is a unique adaptation of the traditional Frankenstein story that is heartwarming and entertaining. Zelda Williams’ directorial debut shows immense promise. She demonstrates a keen eye for visual storytelling and a knack for capturing the spirit of the 80s. Although there are minor missteps along the way, her ability to create a world that feels familiar and fresh is a good sign for her future projects.
Verdict
I give Lisa Frankenstein 3.5 out of 5 stars. It is a fun ride that pays homage to the 80s while offering a fresh twist on a classic tale. Its infectious energy, stellar cast, and clever writing make it a must-see for comedy, horror, and romance fans alike. Here’s to hoping we see more from Zelda Williams in the future!
