Live-Action “Lilo & Stitch” is a Heartfelt, Chaotic, Aloha-Filled Triumph – Review

2025’s Lilo & Stitch is a love letter to the original, Hawaii, and ‘Ohana.

As someone who didn’t grow up a massive Lilo & Stitch fan, I wasn’t sure what to expect going into Disney’s latest live-action adaptation. But I’ve always held a deep love for Hawaii — its people, its land, and its culture. It’s hands down my favorite place on Earth. It wasn’t until I met my wife, a devoted Lilo & Stitch superfan, that I truly came to appreciate the deeper meaning behind the original movie. And let me tell you: this new film brings it all home in the most heartfelt and visually breathtaking way imaginable.

From the first frame, this movie feels like a love letter to the original Lilo & Stitch film, Hawaii culture, and the spirit of family. It’s got heart, humor, sci-fi chaos, and a whole lot of aloha.

One of the things I’ve always loved about the original was how effortlessly the sci-fi world blended with the Hawaiian setting, and this live-action version takes that to the next level. The opening scene aboard the Galactic Federation spacecraft is a high-energy thrill ride that immediately sets the tone: this isn’t your average Earth-bound family film. The way alien chaos collides with island life is bold, fun, and totally inspired — and it just works.

Not a Remake — A Thoughtful Update

Thankfully, this isn’t a shot-for-shot remake of the 2002 animated classic. Instead, it’s a reimagininga respectful update that honors the spirit of the original while carving its own path. It makes smart changes and gives the characters even more depth. While I did miss seeing Captain Gantu, who was such a fun part of the original, it didn’t take away from the magic of the story.

A Stellar Cast Brings Lilo & Stitch to Life

Maia Kealoha is the heart and soul of this movie. Her performance as Lilo is pitch-perfect — sweet, emotional, and hilarious. You believe her every step of the way. She shines in every scene and embodies what makes Lilo an unforgettable character.

Sydney Agudong gives a powerful performance as Nani. She brings so much raw emotion and big sister energy. You can feel the weight she’s carrying and the deep love she has for Lilo. She absolutely nails it.

Kaipo Dudoit does a fantastic job of embodying David, the loyal, laid-back surf dude with a heart of gold. We had the chance to interview Kaipo on an episode of The Moviegoer Society, and let me tell you — he’s just as genuine off-screen. His scenes are warm and charming, and his chemistry with the cast, especially Nani, is spot-on. I can’t wait to see what roles he takes on next.

Tia Carrere, who originally voiced Nani in the animated film, is brilliant here as the social worker. It’s a full-circle casting choice that longtime fans will truly appreciate.

Galifianakis and Magnussen Are Comic Gold

And then there’s the alien duo: Zach Galifianakis as Pleakley and Billy Magnussen as Jumba Jookiba. These two are pure chaos together in the best way. Their dynamic is hilarious, weird, and heart-packed — exactly what fans hoped for.

Chris Sanders returns as the voice of Stitch, and that iconic voice still hits. Stitch is as unpredictable, destructive, and oddly lovable as ever. His wild antics bring nonstop fun and a surprising amount of heart.

And let’s not forget the music, which plays a huge role in this movie. Just like the original, the soundtrack here helps amplify every emotional moment and keeps the energy flowing. From touching instrumentals to feel-good island tunes, the music wraps the whole film in even more warmth and soul.

Verdict

I give Lilo & Stitch 5 out of 5 stars. It is beautiful, emotional, funny, chaotic, and full of love. It celebrates Ohana in a big way and proves that some remakes can absolutely get it right. I wish we had a post-credit scene to tease a sequel because I’m ready for more. Bring on the next chapter!

Rating: 5 out of 5.
