Focus Features Unveils ‘LORNE,’ a Documentary Exploring the Legacy of Lorne Michaels and Saturday Night Live

A behind-the-scenes portrait of the comedy empire builder, Lorne Michaels.

Focus Features has announced LORNE, a new feature documentary about the famously private creator of Saturday Night Live. The film, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, will open in U.S. theaters on April 17, 2026.

The project marks the first full behind-the-scenes portrait of Lorne Michaels, the producer who launched and maintained one of television’s most influential comedy institutions for nearly 50 years. While the long-running sketch series has been analyzed endlessly, its architect has remained largely out of the spotlight.

A Rare Look at Comedy’s Quiet Architect

According to the studio, LORNE reframes a cultural story that audiences believe they already know. The documentary promises unprecedented access to the reserved creative figure who shaped multiple generations of comedians and transformed late-night television.

The film includes archival material and interviews with alumni who passed through Studio 8H, including Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, John Mulaney, Andy Samberg, Conan O’Brien, and Chris Rock.

Morgan Neville Returns to Familiar Ground

The film reunites Focus Features and Neville for a fourth collaboration following Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain, and Piece by Piece. His work often explores cultural icons through intimate storytelling.

Neville’s documentary résumé includes the Academy Award-winning 20 Feet From Stardom and the Emmy-winning political chronicle Best of Enemies. He also recently directed Man on the Run, centered on Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles creative era.

The Man Behind the Institution

Born in Toronto in 1944, Michaels began writing for television in Canada before moving to Los Angeles in the early 1970s. NBC hired him to develop a new late-night comedy program aimed at younger audiences. That show debuted in 1975 as Saturday Night Live and quickly reshaped television humor with live sketches, political satire, and musical performances.

The series introduced future stars such as Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, and Kristen Wiig, while influencing film, stand-up comedy, and political commentary. Michaels has remained its guiding force for decades, becoming one of the most powerful producers in entertainment despite rarely stepping in front of the camera.

By focusing on the person behind the weekly chaos, LORNE aims to shift attention from sketches to the leadership that kept the show alive through changing eras, casts, and audiences.

The documentary opens exclusively in theaters on April 17, 2026.
