From Meet the Parents to Focker-In-Law.

Twenty-five years ago today, Meet the Parents hit theaters. That film would become one of the most quotable comedies of the early 2000s. Directed by Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Fockers), the 2000 hit brought together Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro in a clash of personalities that would spawn a billion-dollar comedy franchise.
A Classic Comedy of Discomfort
The film follows Greg Focker. He is a kind-hearted but perpetually nervous male nurse played by Ben Stiller, who plans to propose to his girlfriend Pam (Teri Polo). His romantic intentions are derailed when he meets her overprotective father, Jack Byrnes, a retired CIA agent played with deadpan menace by Robert De Niro. What begins as a weekend visit turns into an escalating series of disasters involving lost luggage, broken family heirlooms, and one very unfortunate cat named Jinx.

While Meet the Parents is best remembered for its cringeworthy humor, the story itself dates back to a 1992 independent film of the same name by Greg Glienna and Jacqueline Cahill. Universal Pictures later acquired the rights and gave it a big-budget remake, setting the stage for one of the decade’s biggest comedy successes.
Behind the Lens and Around the Table
Under Jay Roach’s direction, the film struck a balance between awkward realism and slapstick timing. Stiller’s escalating anxiety played perfectly against De Niro’s intimidating calm, creating an instant odd-couple dynamic that audiences couldn’t get enough of. The ensemble cast added warmth and charm to the tension. You had Blythe Danner as Jack’s patient wife Dina, Teri Polo as the loving but conflicted Pam, and Owen Wilson as the too-perfect ex, Kevin.
“I Have Nipples, Greg, Can You Milk Me?”
Few films have produced as many memorable lines that entered the pop-culture lexicon. From “You can’t spell Focker without ‘OK’” to “I have nipples, Greg, can you milk me?”, Meet the Parents became a quote machine, cementing its status as a must-watch for anyone who’s ever dreaded meeting their in-laws.
From Parents to Fockers and Beyond
The success of Meet the Parents led to two sequels. Meet the Fockers (2004) and Little Fockers (2010) expanded the Byrnes-Focker family tree and upped the comedic chaos. The first sequel featured Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand as Greg’s eccentric parents. It became one of the highest-grossing comedies of its time.
Now, 25 years after the original, the beloved franchise is set to return to theaters with a brand-new installment. FOCKER-IN-LAW, starring Ariana Grande, Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner, Teri Polo, and Beanie Feldstein, hits theaters November 25, 2026.
Still in the Circle of Trust
Two and a half decades later, Meet the Parents remains one of the best modern examples of relatable comedy — where misunderstandings, insecurity, and family approval collide in the most uncomfortable (and hilarious) ways possible. It’s a movie that proves sometimes love isn’t the hardest part of a relationship — meeting the parents is.
