Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice Review: Vince Vaughn Doubles the Fun in SXSW Time-Travel Comedy

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is a time-travel comedy that doubles the fun.

If you’ve ever asked if two Vince Vaughns are better than one, thankfully BenDavid Grabinski’s film ‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’ definitively answers the question with a resounding, “yes!” Time travel, comedy, crime, and action result in a film that’s as terrifically fun as it is silly.

The Story: Survival Across Timelines

In ‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’, Vince Vaughn is Nick, a gangster who travels back in time to assist his friend Mike (James Marsden) and wife Alice (Eiza Gonzalez) in surviving the most dangerous night of their lives. To complicate matters, Future Nick has to enlist the assistance of Past Nick to help them succeed in this time-travel debacle.

Despite time travel being involved, this isn’t the type of film to focus too much on time paradoxes and the science that comes with it. It’s set on giving viewers the most fun time possible without having to think too much about it. We’ve seen it a million times before, when someone travels from the future and has to avoid their past selves – but ‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’ isn’t worried about any of that. It’s just a matter of survival.

Vince Vaughn Pulls Double Duty

Vaughn’s presence is utilized really well in the story, as the past version is a more imposing gangster, while the future version has had to reckon with some decisions and is less formidable. It’s a great usage of Vaughn to allow him to stretch both his comedic chops and intimidating size and stature. Vaughn, Marsden, and Gonzalez all have genuinely good chemistry together, allowing the comedy to hit and the stakes to feel achievable.

Over-the-Top Action and Humor

The film is over-the-top in almost every way. The action and gunplay are heightened, but the characters also aren’t holding back from having lengthy conversations about the plots and relationships of the show ‘Gilmore Girls.’

Villains portrayed by Keith David and Jimmy Tatro are caricatures of the gangster stereotype played for comedy that hits. It’s a culmination of everyone knowing exactly what type of movie and story they are in.

Naturally, when combining so many different elements, the film can at times feel messy, and when it slows down, you really feel it. But regardless of a few slow-down moments, the film never loses its shine.

Verdict

‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’ is a remarkably exciting time-traveling action-comedy from the mind of BenDavid Grabinski. While at times it might feel messy, it never feels over-complicated, and the moments of both action and comedy often hit hard.
