Monkey Man – Movie Review

Dev Patel truly shines in front and behind the camera in Monkey Man.

Most films offer familiar faces and formulaic plots, but “Monkey Man” bursts onto the scene with the ferocity of a thunderclap, courtesy of the multi-talented Dev Patel. As a first-time director and lead actor, Patel delivers a knockout punch that will leave audiences reeling. From the opening frame to the final credits, “Monkey Man” grabs hold of your senses and refuses to let go. Patel’s vision is bold and unrelenting, weaving a tale of vengeance and redemption that crackles with emotion and intensity. As the story unfolds, the viewers are taken on an exciting rollercoaster ride through the gritty underbelly of a city plagued by corruption and injustice.

One of the most refreshing aspects is its representation on screen.

In an industry where diversity is often an afterthought, Patel’s film proudly takes center stage as a “brown” movie, a rarity in the blockbuster landscape. With the success of recent hits like “RRR,” it’s clear that audiences are hungry for stories that reflect the rich tapestry of human experience, and “Monkey Man” delivers in spades. The film’s runtime is just under two hours, and it may test the patience of some viewers during its slower moments, particularly as it delves into the backstory of Patel’s character. However, these moments deepen the narrative’s emotional resonance, providing a necessary counterbalance to the pulse-pounding action sequences that dominate the screen.

Speaking of action, “Monkey Man” delivers in spades. The stunt work is nothing short of breathtaking, with jaw-dropping fight scenes that rival the best of the genre. Drawing inspiration from the likes of the “John Wick” franchise, the film’s creative cinematography elevates every punch, kick, and chase to dizzying new heights. At the heart of “Monkey Man” is Patel himself, delivering a tour-de-force performance that cements his status as one of Hollywood’s brightest stars. As Kid, a man driven by a thirst for justice and vengeance, Patel commands the screen with a magnetic presence that is impossible to ignore. Supported by a stellar international cast, including Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, and Vipin Sharma, Patel leads the charge with an intensity and conviction that is truly awe-inspiring.

Verdict

I give “Monkey Man” 4.5 out of 5 stars. It is a cinematic experience that demands to be seen. With its pulse-pounding action, heartfelt emotion, and groundbreaking representation, this is a film that transcends genre and really earns that R-rating. As the credits roll and the audience erupts into applause, it’s clear that “Monkey Man” is a triumph in every sense of the word.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
