Disney debuts a new trailer for “Mufasa: The Lion King” at D23 Brazil.

Disney treated fans to an exclusive look at its upcoming film Mufasa: The Lion King during the D23 Brazil showcase. Director Barry Jenkins presented the new trailer, which dives into the origin story of one of the most iconic leaders of the Pride Lands. The film, a prequel to Disney’s 2019 photorealistic The Lion King adaptation, is set for a theatrical release on Dec. 20, 2024.

The trailer takes viewers back to the Pride Lands before Mufasa became king. It offers a fresh look at familiar characters like Scar, Sarabi, Rafiki, and Zazu. Through the lens of Rafiki’s storytelling, audiences learn about Mufasa’s journey from orphaned cub to regal lion, a transformation that didn’t come without hardship and resilience.
The film is structured as a series of flashbacks.
It features Rafiki narrating Mufasa’s life story to Kiara, Simba, and Nala’s young cub. Timon and Pumbaa bring their signature humor to the retelling, adding lighthearted moments to the legend of Mufasa. Audiences will see how Mufasa was once a lost cub. He finds an unexpected ally in Taka. Taka will later be known as Scar. Together, Mufasa and Taka embark on a quest of self-discovery, forming bonds that are pushed to their limits as they encounter a deadly enemy.
The voice cast brings together a blend of new and returning talent. Aaron Pierre voices Mufasa, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays Taka. The film also stars Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, and Preston Nyman as Zazu. Other stars include Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, and John Kani. Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Donald Glover, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter return to reprise their roles as Pumbaa, Timon, Simba, and Nala, respectively.
By blending live-action techniques with photorealistic CGI, Mufasa: The Lion King promises to captivate fans with both stunning visuals and a compelling story of courage, friendship, and the rise of an iconic leader.
