How Chris and Paul Weitz brought Murderbot to life for Apple TV+.

Based on Martha Wells’ Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series, Murderbot is the new sci-fi thriller-comedy giving Apple TV+ subscribers a self-aware, sarcastic security construct like no other. Murderbot is a self-hacking robot who wants just one thing: to be left alone to binge futuristic soap operas. Instead, it has to hide its free will and protect vulnerable humans who can’t seem to survive without it.
I caught up with creators, writers, directors, and executive producers Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz to get the inside scoop on how they brought this sardonic fan favorite to life — from discovering the perfect book to finding the ultimate Murderbot in Alexander Skarsgård.
The Voice That Hooked Them
When I asked what hooked them on Murderbot, Paul didn’t even hesitate — it was all about the character’s voice.“I think the voice of the character in the book from the first sentence on… it felt like a great literary character,” Paul told me.

He explained that since the first book, All Systems Red, is a novella, they didn’t have to spend time cutting big chunks out — instead, they got to expand on what was already there. “It’s not too long. So the adaptation process is not going to be about how do we exclude this or that. It was about how do we take what there is and then possibly add on to it a bit,” he said. Sharing the workload made it even more fun. “Chris and I both loving it equally was really exciting because it meant one had to do half the work,” Paul joked.
Why Alexander Skarsgård Is the Perfect Murderbot
We all know casting can make or break a show, so I had to know why they chose Skarsgård. Chris lit up when I asked.“Well, I think that Alexander is huge and formidable in person, but also actually kind of a goofball,” Chris said. “Once you get to know him, you realize there’s a very strange inner monologue going on.”

That quirky side is exactly what they needed for Murderbot — a character who lives in extremes but can’t let anyone know it’s capable of free will.“This was like a really, really, really interesting character for him, and he felt just right for us,” Chris said. Paul added that Skarsgård didn’t mind playing “a slightly outdated third-rate model” either — he was all in for the role.
Building a Believable Future
No great sci-fi series is complete without thoughtful world-building. Paul shared one of his favorite personal Easter eggs: a childhood comic book he made with Chris called the HMS Twodor. “When I was 12, when Chris was 8, I did a sci-fi comic called the HMS Twodor or USS Twodor. I sold it to Chris for a quarter. We put that into Sanctuary Moon,” he said, laughing.

Chris added that the Murderbot universe is a mash-up of cutting-edge tech and budget cuts. “It’s a world in which a lot of things have been extruded by giant 3D printers,” he said. “This giant corporation is hiring out mining equipment sort of on the cheap. So you’ll see a lot of purposely ill-fitting or frayed or used parts of things. It’s very high tech, but also kind of lowest bidder.”
They even made sure Murderbot’s suit includes a corporate logo. “We’re really trying to think of the logic of why decisions are made visually in the world,” Paul said.
What the Creators Would Binge Like Murderbot
Since Murderbot is obsessed with soap operas, I had to know what Chris and Paul would watch if they could unplug for a weekend. “Twilight Zone for me, the original Twilight Zone,” Paul said right away.
Chris laughed and said he’d probably spend his downtime watching the one thing Murderbot definitely wouldn’t: “I’d probably just watch Instagram all the time, but it would be only animal friendships.”
A Must-Watch for Sci-Fi Fans
Whether you’re a longtime fan of Martha Wells’ books or just looking for a fresh, funny, and thought-provoking sci-fi ride, Murderbot is the perfect new obsession. It’s smart, darkly comedic, and just human enough to feel uncomfortably real — exactly what makes it so special.

Murderbot is now streaming on Apple TV+.
