National Treasure Turns 20: The Legacy of History and Adventure

Why National Treasure still captivates audiences 20 years later.

Twenty years ago, National Treasure premiered on November 19, 2004, sparking a franchise that remains a fan favorite. Directed by Jon Turteltaub, this action-adventure film weaves a thrilling tale of history, mystery, and treasure hunting set against iconic American landmarks.

The story follows historian and amateur cryptologist Benjamin Franklin Gates, portrayed by Nicolas Cage, on a quest to find a hidden treasure linked to America’s Founding Fathers. The journey begins with a clue hidden in the Declaration of Independence, leading Gates and his team—including tech-savvy sidekick Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) and archivist Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger)—to the nation’s capital and beyond. Together, they unravel a series of intricate riddles, all while evading a rival treasure hunter played by Sean Bean.

Set against the backdrop of Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City, the film cleverly intertwines historical lore with high-stakes action. One standout scene involves a car chase through the streets of D.C., during which Diane Kruger performed her stunts, adding authenticity to the adrenaline-pumping sequence.

National Treasure was a box office hit, grossing over $347 million worldwide.

The film’s success led to a sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007), which sent Gates on another adventure, this time to clear his family’s name and uncover secrets surrounding President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The sequel expanded the franchise’s appeal and left fans clamoring for more.

The franchise saw a resurgence in 2022 with the Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History. While the series introduced new characters and storylines, it paid homage to the original films and brought back Justin Bartha as Riley. Fans continue to hope for a third film in the series, a sentiment echoed by Jon Voight, who played Ben Gates’ father, Patrick. During our interview, Voight expressed his enthusiasm for resuming his role should the opportunity arise.

Reflecting on its legacy, National Treasure remains beloved for its mix of action, humor, and historical intrigue. Nicolas Cage’s charismatic performance, combined with the engaging dynamic among the cast, made the film a cultural touchstone. As fans celebrate the 20th anniversary, the film’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to inspire curiosity about history and the hidden stories it may still hold. Whether through another sequel or continued exploration in new formats, the treasure hunt isn’t over just yet.
