Jacob Tremblay and Russell Crowe portray Ted Kaczynski at different stages of his life in Netflix’s psychological drama about the infamous Unabomber.
There have been several harrowing moments in the history of the United States, but some can only come close to the tragedies caused by Ted Kaczynski, aka the Unabomber. Although there have been films that have explored the motivations and story of Kaczynski, Netflix’s take on the subject matter takes a more dramatic approach.
Netflix released the official trailer for Unabomber, which premieres on the platform in late September. Inspired by true events, Unabomber follows Ted Kaczynski, played by Jacob Tremblay, and his drastic transformation into the domestic terrorist many know.
Subjected to controversial psychological experiments by Professor Henry Murray, played by Russell Crowe, Kaczynski’s troubled past resurfaces decades later when his manhunt, led by FBI agent Joanne Miller, played by Shailene Woodley, brings to light the chilling consequences of ambition and isolation.
Netflix’s Unabomber looks to explore Kaczynski’s psychology and his own personal struggles, which are only emphasized by Murray’s series of experiments. In reality, Kaczynski’s bombings led to the deaths of three people and injured 25 more throughout the United States. The manhunt for the Unabomber lasted 17 years, making it the longest manhunt in American history today. Kaczynski was imprisoned until 2023, when he took his own life after being diagnosed with late-stage rectal cancer.
Netflix’s Unabomber Is a Time Capsule of a Darker Period
Previously, director Janus Metz spoke about exploring Kaczynski’s story in a new light. “Unabmber is a story about a young man who feels increasingly disenfranchised by society and decides to take up violence as a means of revenge,” Metz told Netflix’s Tudum.
“What really drew me in was the story about Ted Kaczynski’s years at Harvard when he was a young math student. This was a side to the story I didn’t know about; it helps uncover a very dark chapter in American history.”
In addition to Crowe and Tremblay, the cast of Netflix’s Unabomber includes Shailene Woodley, Annabelle Wallis, Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg, Marc Menchaca. The film is directed by Janus Metz and written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves.
Unabomber is produced by Sophie Cassidy for 2.0 Entertainment. Executive producers on the film include Donald J. Lee, Sam Chalsen, and Nelson Greaves in Association with MRC.
Unabomber premieres on Netflix on September 25.
