Unpacking the Emotional Depth of Nickel Boys with the Cast and Director

Bringing Colson Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys to life.

The adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Nickel Boys, has finally come to life on the big screen in a powerful and emotionally charged film, Nickel Boys. Directed by RaMell Ross, the movie chronicles the bond between two Black teenagers navigating the horrors of a juvenile reformatory in 1960s Florida. Inspired by real-life events, the film delves into themes of friendship, resilience, and hope amidst systemic injustice.

Recently, I spoke with RaMell Ross and cast members Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Ethan Herisse, and Brandon Wilson about their experiences bringing this story to life.

Crafting a Vision

When asked about his first encounter with the novel, director RaMell Ross described how the story’s twist and emotional depth resonated with him. “After reading it, it made me question reality and all my narratives,” Ross said. “The idea of Elwood getting in the car to go to college—a simple decision altering his life so drastically—was universally terrifying and personally haunting.”

Ross also spoke about the immersive filmmaking style that became a hallmark of Nickel Boys. Drawing inspiration from his earlier work, Hale County This Morning, This Evening, Ross explained the collaborative process of developing the camera’s unique perspective alongside cinematographer Jomo Fray. “The whole thing is a process of learning,” he said. “It’s about being open to what the day and the scene teach you.”

Love Amid Hardship

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s portrayal of Hattie, Elwood’s loving and nurturing grandmother, adds a grounding warmth to the film. When asked about embodying such a character, Ellis-Taylor reflected on the duality of love. “Love is a trickster,” she said. “It makes us smile in the middle of violence, and it’s something we can’t legislate or police.”

Her favorite scene—a tender hug between Hattie and Elwood—was a raw and emotional moment for audiences. “I didn’t think much about it; I just had to be present,” she shared. “Touching Brandon [Wilson] beforehand to feel his warmth helped ground me in the moment.”

A Nickel Boys Friendship On and Off-Screen

Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson bring Elwood and Turner to life, whose contrasting outlooks on survival forge a transformative friendship. The actors shared how the film’s point-of-view style shaped their performances. “We spent time with the material and worked on scenes together to feel comfortable and present,” Herisse said.

Their off-screen friendship enriched their on-screen dynamic, according to Wilson. “We learned how to stare down the camera but still feel the other’s presence,” he said. “It was like having a conversation, even when speaking directly to the lens.”

The emotional depth of their performances is evident throughout the film, with scenes that remain etched in viewers’ minds. Wilson highlighted the picnic table moment between Elwood and Hattie as particularly impactful.

A Call to Remember

For the cast and crew, Nickel Boys is more than just a film—it’s a tribute to the boys of the Dozier School for Boys, whose stories inspired Whitehead’s novel. “We must remember these children,” Ellis-Taylor emphasized.

With its stunning visuals, immersive storytelling, and deeply human performances, Nickel Boys stands as an unforgettable cinematic experience and a call to confront the painful truths of history.

Nickel Boys is in theaters now.
